Next up is 1978's THE COMEBACK, with crooner Jack Jones as a washed-up singer who travels to England and becomes implicated in a case involving the grisly murder of his estranged ex-wife. 1977's SCHIZO follows the plight of a beautiful skier stalked by a deranged, homicidal fan just prior to her wedding. Finally, 1971's DIE SCREAMING, MARIANNE concerns a 20-year-old nightclub performer hunted down by a bloodthirsty gang of extortionists weeks before she receives a vast inheritance from her biological father. … more less -

Twilight's Last Gleaming
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 11/13/2012 Rating R Production Year: 1977 Run Time: 144 mins Released By: Olive Films Cast: Burt Lancaster, Paul Winfield, Burt Young, Charles Durning, Phil Brown When American air force general Lawrence Dell (Burt Lancaster) is framed for a crime he didn't commit and sent to prison, he vows vengeance against those who put him there--including the president (Charles Durning). Along with other late-20th-century political thrillers such as SILKWOOD, MIRACLE MILE, and THE CHINA SYNDROME, TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING draws heavily and effectively on the fear of human annihilation by means of nuclear holocaust. Convincing sets and special effects aid director Robert Aldrich's creation of a believable crisis situation. Lancaster cements the film's terrifying fusion of realism and nightmarish suspense with his performance as the frenzied malcontent with his finger on the button. … more less -

They Live
Genre: Science-Fiction/Fantasy Release Date: 11/06/2012 Rating R Production Year: 1988 Run Time: 93 mins Released By: Shout! Factory Cast: Roddy Piper, Keith David, Meg Foster, George Flower John Nada (Roddy Piper) is a quiet loner, a drifter who gets work where ever he can find it. While working on a construction site in L.A. and sleeping in a vagrant community at night, John stumbles upon a secret society of alien beings who pose as wealthy and powerful people in human society. John joins a rebel group commited to exposing this conspiracy, and becomes their reluctant leader and the only hope of the human race. Former wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper is outstanding as the unassuming hero, playing the role with understated shock at what he uncovers and stubborn courage when he confronts it. Director John Carpenter laces the film with his trademark blend of humor and horror, making aliens that are hideously arrogant, greedy, and easy to hate, while the humans are confused and desperate in their struggle against them. The world looks a little different at the end of THEY LIVE, and one will never look at billboards, money, or sunglasses the same way again. The film contains the longest, and perhaps most realistic, fist fight in film history. Paying homage to INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, the film was based on the short story EIGHT O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING by Ray Nelson. … more less -
Bonfire of the Vanities
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 11/06/2012 Rating R Production Year: 1990 Run Time: 126 mins Released By: Warner Home Video Cast: Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffith, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, F. Murray Abraham Brian De Palma (SCARFACE) directed this lavish adaptation of Tom Wolfe's best-selling satirical novel, featuring Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffith, and Bruce Willis. Hanks stars as Sherman McCoy, a distinctly 1980s brand of wealthy Wall Street wizard who takes a mighty fall from his glitzy lifestyle after he and his mistress (Griffith) put a Bronx youth into a coma via a hit-and-run accident. Alcoholic reporter Peter Fallow (Willis) sees the crime as an opportunity for big headlines, and soon Sherman is the target of every political and media group in the city, including an Al Sharpton-style black leader named Rev. Bacon (John Hancock) and a sleazy D.A. (F. Murray Abraham). SEX IN THE CITY babe Kim Catrall costars as Sherman's long-suffering wife, and Morgan Freeman is the judge who tries to reign in this three-ring media circus of a case. Like the decade it parodies, this film is proudly over the top in its lavishness. It's also filled to overflowing with inspired casting, wildly inventive comedy, and the sort of artistically ambitious tracking shots for which its director is renowned. … more less -

Rosemary's Baby
Genre: Horror/Suspense Release Date: 10/30/2012 Rating R Production Year: 1968 Run Time: 136 mins Released By: Criterion Collection Cast: Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Ralph Bellamy, Sidney Blackmer Roman Polanski's stylish occult thriller ROSEMARY'S BABY is possibly the director's most famous film and was a big box-office success at the time of its 1968 release. This was Polanski's first American feature film, following his frightening 1965 REPULSION, which was made in England. The use of producer William Castle--famous for popular low-budget horror--helped propel Polanski forward into a long and rigorous career as one of the masters of the genre. The terrifying satanic story forever haunts fans of this cult film, the setting of which--Manhattan's Dakota building--carries a ghost story of its own as the location of John Lennon's assassination. A young, happily married couple, waif-like Rosemary (Mia Farrow) and struggling actor Guy (John Cassavetes), move into a spacious apartment in a venerable old building off Central Park. They are befriended by the elderly couple next door, Roman (Sidney Blackmer) and Minnie Castavet (Ruth Gordon in an Oscar-winning performance), who seem to take a special interest in Rosemary's well-being. Shortly after another young woman in the building commits suicide by jumping out a window, Rosemary begins to be plagued by disturbing dreams, including a hallucinogenic black mass sequence in which she is raped by something "inhuman" while surrounded by a host of unlikely spectators. Rosemary discovers she is pregnant and soon falls violently ill. The Castavets offer advice and home remedies and even go so far as to talk her into seeing a new doctor of their choosing. But when the young couple's friend Hutch (Maurice Evans) exposes her eccentric but seemingly well-meaning neighbors as members of a witches' coven, Rosemary realizes that she is the victim of a deeply evil conspiracy and that no one can be trusted--not even her own husband. … more less -

Sunday Bloody Sunday
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 10/23/2012 Rating R Production Year: 1971 Run Time: 110 mins Released By: Criterion Collection Cast: Glenda Jackson, Peter Finch, Murray Head, Peggy Ashcroft, Vivian Pickles Directed by John Schlesinger, SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY is a sociologically astute drama about the bisexual love triangle between three characters navigating the changing mores of the early-1970s sexual revolution. Gay doctor Daniel Hirsh (Peter Finch) and divorced working woman Alex Greville (Glenda Jackson) are both involved with the same man--the much younger and rather self-absorbed bisexual sculptor Bob Elkin (Murray Head). Rather than keeping the simultaneous affairs a secret, Bob has chosen to make Daniel and Alex perfectly aware of each other's existence, leading to melancholy ruminations on the shifting nature of love, sex, and relationships in an increasingly fractured British society. Considered groundbreaking for its frank depiction of homosexuality (as well as featuring one of the first onscreen same-sex kisses), the film's nonjudgmental approach to its characters' seething loneliness is shaped by Penelope Gilliatt's intelligent script, Schlesinger's fluid direction, and the disarmingly honest performances of its two leads. SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY deftly straddles the line between character study and social commentary, offering mature drama that is both specific to its era and disconcertingly prescient. … more less
