Genre: Comedies Release Date: 05/28/2013 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 1994 Cast: Brendan Fraser, Adam Sandler, Steve Buscemi, Joe Mantegna, Michael McKean Chazz (Brendan Fraser), Pip (Adam Sandler), and Rex (Steve Buscemi) are the Lone Rangers, a heavy metal rock group that's going nowhere fast. Tired of playing lame gigs and trying to win over record executives, the band heads to its local radio station in a desperate attempt to have its demo played. Unfortunately, things go awry when toy guns are pulled out and mistaken for real ones in the heat of the moment, forcing the band to hold the station's employees hostage. Surrounded by the police and thousands of rock & roll fans who have flocked to the station, the boys become unlikely heroes, a voice for those who choose not to conform to corporate America. A little lighter than Michael Lehmann's dark comedy directorial debut HEATHERS, this film offers plenty of physical comedy from Michael Richards and Chris Farley as well as humorous performances from the boys in the band, Michael McKean as the station manager, and Joe Mantegna as DJ Ian the Shark. Live performances by White Zombie and the Galactic Cowboys set the tone for the film, which also boasts an impressive soundtrack. … more less -

Genre: Dramas Release Date: 05/28/2013 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 1998 Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Skeet Ulrich, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Gail Cronauer Texas filmmaker Richard Linklater's lighthearted Western tells the true story of the Newton brothers, who are regarded as the most successful bank robbers in the history of the United States. The time is the early 1920s and the place is Texas. When Willis Newton (Matthew McConaughey) returns from a four-year stint in prison, he quickly falls into a life of bank robbing. Excited by the prospects of stealing even more money, he recruits his three brothers--the charming Jess (Ethan Hawke), the sensitive Joe (Skeet Ulrich), and the brutish Dock (Vincent D'Onofrio)--and ace safecracker Brentwood Glasscock (Dwight Yoakam) to help him ravage the country's banks, as long as no one gets hurt. Along the way, Willis meets and falls in love with Louise Brown (Julianna Margulies), a single mother living in Omaha. Eventually, greed gets the better of the gang and they set their sights on a federal train that is transporting three million dollars in cash and bonds. Unfortunately, the heist goes awry and the boys are threatened with jail time. Linklater's film is an affable and sweet affair, with a goodnatured tone that greatly mimics the Newton brothers themselves. Linklater alumni McConaughey and Hawke headline the all-star cast, while music by the Bad Livers keeps the atmosphere breezy throughout. … more less -

In a desperate attempt to gain Alison's affections, Brendan naively strikes up a deal with the devil (Elizabeth Hurley), a seductive and wickedly naughty woman who promises Elliot seven wishes in exchange for his soul. The devil does her best to torture Elliot's poor soul, giving him all seven wishes, each of which in some way goes astray. Elliot is in for the ride of his life as the saucy devil transforms him into a Colombian drug lord, a supersensitive pushover, and an NBA star with more brawn than brains as his wishes become manipulated into one outrageous disaster after another. Fraser is an acting tour de force, deftly playing a wide variety of characters using his comic genius and flair for the absurd, while Hurley is at her stylish and seductive best as the haute couture devilish prankster. Together they ignite the screen with wit, charm, and palpable chemistry. Director Harold Ramis (CADDYSHACK, GROUNDHOG DAY) wrote and directed this hilarious remake of the 1967 movie of the same name directed by Stanley Donen that starred Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Raquel Welch, and Eleanor Bron. … more less -
Planet of the Apes
Genre: Science-Fiction/Fantasy Release Date: 05/28/2013 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 2001 Run Time: 118 mins Released By: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham-Carter, Michael Clarke Duncan, Paul Giamatti In remaking this classic sci-fi horror film, director Tim Burton takes on a whopping challenge and succeeds. Astronaut Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) is part of a space station crew that, in the year 2029, is conducting experiments in training genetically engineered chimps to perform complex away missions. When Leo's chimp disappears into a worm hole, Leo unadvisedly goes after him, ending up in a parallel world in which the monkeys are the keepers and humans are traded and caged like animals. It's a horrifying place, and the whole atmosphere, colored by Burton's direction and Rick Baker's incredible special effects makeup, is charged with terror. Leo becomes a heroic figure in the eyes of his defeated human brethren, and he puts his trust--and his hope for escape--in Ari (Helena Bonham Carter), a forward-thinking ape who believes in human rights. But Leo has formidable opponents in Thade (Tim Roth) and Attar (Michael Clark Duncan), two power-hungry, testosterone-charged apes who wish to rid the planet of humans altogether. This excellent rendition of PLANET OF THE APES is more than just a remake: it includes intense physicality on the part of the actors, complex mythology lacing the story, chilling philosophical realizations, and an amazing cameo by original APES star Charlton Heston. The combination of those complex parts makes for a riveting viewing experience. … more less -

Nell
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 04/02/2013 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 1994 Run Time: 114 mins Released By: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment Cast: Jodie Foster, Liam Neeson, Natasha Richardson, Richard Libertini The backwoods of North Carolina is where Nell (Jodie Foster) lives, all alone. She has her own form of language and no idea of a world beyond her small plot of land. Then civilization enters her life in the form of two doctors (Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson), who discover the untamed wild child. Now that they have come to study her, Nell's life will never be the same again--but neither will theirs. Based on Mark Handley's play IDIOGLOSSIA, which means a language for one, NELL is an intriguing look at a person who has grown up without any contact with the modern world--like the famous wild boy of Aveyron portrayed in François Truffaut's WILD CHILD. Foster is excellent in delivering Nell's unique language and body movements, while Neeson and Richardson are intense in their sparring over how Nell should be treated. For eclectic director Michael Apted, this film is just one of several (COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER and GORILLAS IN THE MIST) he has made about women who are not easily categorized. NELL is also the first film from Foster's production company, Egg Pictures. … more less -
Anna and the King
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 04/02/2013 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 1999 Run Time: 147 mins Released By: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment Cast: Jodie Foster, Yun-Fat Chow, Bai Ling, Tom Felton, Randall Duk Kim Based on the diary writings of English widow Anna Leonowens, who journeyed to Siam in 1862 to tutor the children of King Mongkut, this is a grand, epic motion picture that recalls the Hollywood days of yore (see 1946's ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM and 1956's THE KING AND I for earlier screen adaptations). Chow Yun Fat delivers a heartwarming performance that should finally earn him star status in America, and Jodie Foster is, as always, a magnetic screen presence. Their relationship, which is sparked by a just-beneath-the-surface romantic undercurrent, propels the story forward and provides it with its emotional core. As the film builds to its exciting climax, the relationship between the two is tested even further. … more less -

Batman Returns
Genre: Science-Fiction/Fantasy Release Date: 02/12/2013 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 1992 Cast: Michael Keaton, Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny DeVito, Christopher Walken, Michael Gough In director Tim Burton's sequel to his successful BATMAN (1989), the Caped Crusador (Michael Keaton) is pitted against the demented, ravenous Penguin (Danny DeVito), a pitiful, orphaned psychopathic freak who once went on a baby-killing spree, and a "power" hungry capitalist villain Max Shreck (Christopher Walken). As the two criminals plot to gain domination over Gotham City, BATMAN must plot to stop them. In the highly stylized BATMAN RETURNS--complete with dark, Gothic architecture and moody lighting--Batman (and his alter-ego Bruce Wayne) is thrown a third enemy, a terrible distraction: Cat Woman (fearlessly and fabulously played by Michelle Pfeiffer). She is the slinky, sharp-clawed alter-ego of Shreck's secretary Selina. Batman must overcome his own dark past, and his present love entanglements, to rid Gotham of it's evil enemies, this time with even more intricately designed sets and tongue-in-cheek humor, making BATMAN RETURNS an action-packed, but darkly fun adventure. … more less -

Batman
Genre: Science-Fiction/Fantasy Release Date: 02/12/2013 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 1989 Cast: Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger, Jack Palance, Jerry Hall Tim Burton's BATMAN, inspired by Frank Miller's graphic novel THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, is a Gothic, Wagnerian treatment of the Batman mythos that explains the origins of Batman (Michael Keaton) and his nemesis, the maniacal Joker (a ripe Jack Nicholson). Gotham City is a sunless, ominous haven for criminals, held in the corrupt grip of crime boss Carl Grissom (the ever-magnetic Jack Palance), and terrorized by a sadistic vandal and murderer known as The Joker. But it isn't long before a dark, mysterious caped crusader, who goes by the name of BATMAN, is on their trail and trying to thwart their evil doings. In this darkly entertaining retelling of the Marvel comic classic, ace photojournalist Vicki Vale (warmly and sympathetically played by Kim Basinger) is also on the trail--she wants to find out who Batman really is. Based on the popular comic book character created by Bob Kane for DC Comics; the story and tone have nothing in common with the popular TV series of the 1960s. Imaginative special effects and imposing, Gothic architectural sets dominate this visually graphic, stylish film. Keaton gives a brooding performance as the Caped Crusader and his interestingly understated alter-ego Bruce Wane. But is it Nicholson's Joker that steals the show, with his unnerving, brilliantly maniacal portrayal, especially in the context of his twisted relationship with Grissom's gal Alicia (a lanky, disquieting Jerry Hall). … more less
