While her family is off on a trek through the Serengeti in their high-tech, gadget-filled RV, Eliza is sent off to a stuffy English boarding school by her strict grandmother (Lynn Redgrave). Poor Eliza must figure out how to escape back to Africa and put a stop to the aforementioned evil poachers, all without her special ability to talk to the animals, a power she lost because of her obnoxious sister Debbie (Danielle Harris). Produced and animated by Klasky-Csupo (the team responsible for THE RUGRATS MOVIE) the THORNBERRYS' colorful 2D animation style is refreshingly simplistic, yet still manages to depict its jungle settings with surprisingly vivid intensity. Youngsters should be consistently engaged and adults will appreciate the high zaniness level, rapid-fire plotting, and absence of cloying sentiment. Sent to live with his drunken uncle after his father's death in a fire, Hugo learned how to wind the massive clocks that run throughout the station. When the uncle disappears one day, Hugo decides to maintain the clocks on his own, hoping nobody will catch on to him squatting in the station. His natural aptitude for engineering leads him to steal gears, tools, and other items from a toy-shop owner who maintains a storefront in the station. Hugo needs these purloined pieces in order to rebuild a mechanical man that was left in the father's care at the museum -- the restoration was a project father and son did together. After parting ways to protest Fred's self-centered treatment of the Mystery Inc. gang, they are brought back together by Emile Mondavarious (Rowan Atkinson) to help solve a ghoulish mystery at his teen resort and fun park, Spooky Island. Although SCOOBY-DOO is primarily a live action movie, Gosnell keeps the characters and visuals cartoonish at all times. For fans of the series, all of the expected trappings are present (from Fred's ascot to the inevitable "meddling kids" line from the bad guy), but the film also pokes fun at these elements throughout, managing to balance kiddie fun with a more grown-up self-mocking.
