Chicken Little
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 03/21/2006 Rating G Production Year: 2005 Run Time: 81 mins Released By: Buena Vista Home Entertainment Cast: Zach Braff, Joan Cusack, Don Knotts, Catherine O'Hara, Steve Zahn Disney's first venture into the realm of CGI animation (without Pixar) tells the tale of all-animal town Oakey Oaks's most infamous resident, Chicken Little (voiced by Zach Braff), who causes town-wide panic when he claims the sky is falling. A year later he's still shunned by everyone, including his dad (Gary Marshall), a single rooster with an incredibly wide tie. Determined to end his losing streak, the bespectacled Little joins the baseball team, even though he can barely lift the bat. Luckily his three equally outcast friends have faith in him: a pig with a yen for '70s disco (Steve Zahn); a Harpo Marx-esque goldfish in a diving helmet; and Abby, a buck-toothed female duckling (Joan Cusak). According to her sources in magazines such as Modern Mallard, Abby is sure Chicken Little merely needs "closure" with dad over the sky incident. But when the sky really does start falling due to a full-on alien invasion, and only Chicken Little knows why, dad still doesn't want to believe him. Kids are sure to understand Chick's frustration in this matter, and parents will dig the sly riffs on films like VERTIGO (1958), THE BLOB (1959), INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996), and WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953), as well as Disney's own back catalog. In place of the usual musical numbers, CHICKEN LITTLE includes montages set to Barenaked Ladies songs and reinterpreted pop favorites (the old Art Garfunkel gut-wrencher, "All I Know," is a standout), while celebrity voiceovers come from Harry Shearer, Wallace Shawn, Patrick Stewart, Adam West, and Don Knotts, with Amy Sedaris as the obnoxious "Foxy Loxy." … more less -

Bye Bye Birdie
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 07/20/1999 Rating G Production Year: 1963 Run Time: 112 mins Released By: Sony Pictures Home Cast: Janet Leigh, Dick Van Dyke, Ann-Margret, Paul Lynde, Maureen Stapleton This entertaining musical, based on the Broadway hit inspired by the hysteria surrounding Elvis Presley's induction into the army, traces the shock waves a drafted rock & roll star, Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson), creates when he comes to a small town to kiss adoring fan Kim McAfee (Ann-Margret) good-bye on national TV. A fiesty secretary, Rosie DeLeon (Janet Leigh), has put the whole plan in motion, hoping that Birdie will sing a song composed by her beau, Albert Peterson (Dick Van Dyke), enabling Rosie's boyfriend to finally break free of his domineering mother (Maureen Stapleton) and marry her. Meanwhile, Kim's new steady, Hugo (Bobby Rydell), is less than pleased about the spotlighted embrace, as are her parents (Paul Lynde and Mary LaRoche)--at least until they get in on the action too. Ed Sullivan appears as himself, Ann-Margret is her usual perky, gyrating self, Van Dyke amply displays his wealth of talents, and Lynde and Stapleton nearly steal the whole production with their hilarious supporting roles. Director George Sidney, who would soon collaborate with the real King in the Presley tour de force VIVA LAS VEGAS, tightens the Broadway original without losing any of its verve and charm to create a rollicking uptempo joyride through a candy-colored early 1960s pop-culture landscape. … more less -

Mr. Bean's Holiday
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 11/27/2007 Rating G Production Year: 2007 Run Time: 90 mins Released By: Universal Studios Home Video Cast: Rowan Atkinson, Emma de Caunes, Jean Rochefort, William Dafoe The hopelessly daft but delightful Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) is back in this jovial comedy. This time he wins a trip to the Cannes Film Festival and havoc ensues to such an extent that he may never even get there. Mostly a series of episodes involving Bean's inability to communicate with French and Russian speakers, this will please youngsters who may be unable to hold continual plot lines together and for whom adult language is still a bafflement. Many of the extended bits are funny: there's Bean's frantic attempts to catch the train, his fouling up World War Two movie set, knocking shellfish into a lady's purse, messing up the Cannes premiere of an uptight director, and bonding with a Russian boy who gets separated from his father (thanks to Bean's misdoings). An aspiring young actress (Emma de Caunes) helps out and Willem Dafoe is the uptight director. Nay-sayng critics will say that Atkinson's rubbery, contorted face and spastic physicality are perhaps best left on the small screen, but millions of Bean fans can't be wrong; there's plenty to enjoy, from the hilarious scene of Bean earning money by lip-synching the songs of a fellow busker, to his meddling in the projection booth at Cannes. The kid in all of us, perhaps still smarting from being called clumsy and clueless, should delight in Bean's weird brand of perfect revenge. As a bonus, the cinematography is beautiful, capturing the glistening waves and beautiful beaches of the Riviera with a travelogue's eye. … more less -
Twelve Chairs, The
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 09/05/2006 Rating G Production Year: 1970 Run Time: 93 mins Released By: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment Cast: Mel Brooks, Frank Langella, Ron Moody, Bridget Brice, Dom DeLuise A stylish, frantic fable and one of director Mel Brooks's earliest films, THE TWELVE CHAIRS is a madcap mystery set in revolutionary Russia. An aging ex-nobleman of the czarist regime, Count I.M. Vorobyaninov (Ron Moody), has finally adjusted to life under the commissars in Russia. But when both he and the local priest, Father Fyodor (Dom DeLuise), find out that a fortune in the count's family jewels is hidden in a chair's upholstery--the chair being one of a set of 12--they each separately return to Moscow to find the hidden fortune. Along the way, the count enlists the aid of a thief (Frank Langella) in the hilarious treasure hunt. Closer in style to THE PRODUCERS than many of Brooks' other spoofs, THE TWELVE CHAIRS is an overlooked comedy gem. DeLuise gives an uproarious performance in which he employs slapstick and physical humor liberally. There is a human side to this film, too, just as there was with Zero Mostel's character, Max Bialystock, in THE PRODUCERS, in the form of Moody's Vorobyaninov. Based on a Russian novel, THE TWELVE CHAIRS marries neurotic humor and cultural dilemmas in the same vein as classic Woody Allen films in later years. … more less -
