Rize
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 10/25/2005 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 2005 Run Time: 84 mins Released By: Lions Gate Home Entertainment Famed photographer David LaChapelle gets behind a different kind of lens for RIZE, his feature film debut. LaChapelle heads to Los Angeles to make his mark in the cinematic world, shooting a documentary about a style of hip-hop dance called "krumping." Dividing his time between the personal lives of the dancers and some spectacular on-screen demonstrations courtesy of the cream of the krumpers, LaChapelle's bright, vivacious photographic style makes an impressive translation to the big screen. Central to LaChapelle's film is Tommy "The Clown" Johnson. In the wake of the 1992 L.A. riots, Tommy performed as a traveling clown act for children's parties. Unable to satisfy the enormous demand for his act, Tommy set up a small clown-recruiting business which flourished under his tutelage. As the 21st century dawned, Tommy noticed his younger recruits had worked a unique and highly agile dance routine into their act, and krumping was born. LaChapelle slowly unravels the ties that bind Tommy and his cohorts throughout the movie; broken homes, domestic violence, and other horrors have cast an irrepressibly dark shadow over the dancers lives. RIZE illustrates how krumping offers a cathartic release from these personal demons, and as the dancers cavort and gyrate for the cameras, it feels like their tortured souls are literally trying to escape from their bodies. In fact, krumping has become so successful that many of the dancers have turned their back on the shadowy gang activities that formerly offered them a highly dangerous outlet for their pent-up frustrations. As the dancers perform a jaw-dropping array of moves, a deliriously infectious mixture of fun, intensity, and jubilant release pours from the screen. Playing out like a west-coast relative to fellow 2005 film, the New York-based MAD HOT BALLROOM, LaChapelle's movie gloriously demonstrates the healing powers of dance. … more less -
Fog of War, The
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 05/11/2004 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 2003 Run Time: 106 mins Released By: Sony Pictures Home Cast: Robert S. McNamara Documentarian Errol Morris directs THE FOG OF WAR, a captivating look at Robert S. McNamara, who served as the Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The movie does not exclusively focus on this part of McNamara's career, however, and instead gives a broad overview of the man he was, his multitude of roles--a Harvard Business School graduate, a Colonel in the Air Force during WWII, president of Ford Motor Company--and his opinions on a variety of historical topics. Inspired by two books written by McNamara--IN RETROSPECT (1995) and WILSON'S GHOST (2001)--Morris gives McNamara a forum to talk about the decisions he made and the influence he had during his career. At the age of 85, McNamara has gained necessary perspective to do just that. Sharp as a tack, loaded with charisma, and generally fascinating, McNamara easily carries the film with his revealing interviews. Meanwhile, Morris's use of archival footage--along with maps and other effective visual aids--add context to McNamara's commentary, and Philip Glass's ominous, pulsing score gives the film's important subject matter the gravity it deserves. … more less -

Moliere
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 01/22/2008 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 2007 Run Time: 121 mins Released By: Sony Pictures Home Cast: Romain Duris, Fabrice Luchini, Laura Morante, Edouard Baer, Ludivine Sagnier Moliere, the French 17th century playwright behind THE MISANTHROPE and TARTUFFE, gets his SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE treatment in this entertaining romantic comedy-drama. Director Laurent Tirard paints a romantic portrait of the artist as a young man that's a deft mix of fact and fiction, involving wealthy buffoon Jourdain (Fabrice Luchini) who enlists Moliere's help to woo the icy Marquise Celimene (SWIMMING POOL's Ludivigne Sagnier). Jourdain's neglected wife (Laura Morante) regards Moliere's presence in their manor with suspicion (he's posing as a religious scholar). The callow Moliere finds himself drawn to Madame, despite her doubts, and she to him, especially when he helps her in aiding the forbidden romance of her daughter. Backed by a robust orchestral score, sumptuous period detail, and plenty of pratfall-suffused romantic entanglements (lifted from Moliere's plays), the movie bravely steps outside its dramatic outline to become a moving meditation on the meaning of love as selflessness, in the best French tradition of intellectual and romantic discourse. Romain Duris (THE BEAT MY HEART SKIPPED) is endearingly mangy as Moliere, but it's Morante who scores highest, playing yet another in Gallic cinema's many celebrated sexy, intelligent older women. It's in French with English subtitles. … more less -

Eyes of Tammy Faye, The
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 07/22/2003 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 2000 Run Time: 80 mins Released By: Lions Gate Home Entertainment Cast: Tammy Faye Bakker, Jerry Falwell, Jim Bakker In this quirky documentary, codirectors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato catch up with the infamous Tammy Faye Messner (formerly Tammy Faye Bakker) 12 years after the Jim Bakker embezzlement scandal and the collapse of the PTL (Praise the Lord) network. The Bakkers launched PTL back in 1974 and within a short time found themselves at the head of a vast televangelist empire raking in millions of dollars in member contributions. When Jim's affair with Jessica Hahn came to light, the couple was ousted from the network by Jerry Falwell. Jim ended up going to prison for fraud, and Tammy found herself alone, grappling with cancer, the aftereffects of her addiction to prescription drugs, and estrangement from her family. Abruptly removed from the public eye and virtually forgotten, Tammy Faye has since attempted several as yet unfruitful media comebacks, which are documented here. Of course, there's also the more frivolous side to Tammy's story, such as some hilarious early TV appearances involving singing hand puppets and revealing background information on her obsession with mascara. The film (narrated by drag icon RuPaul Charles) is a campy yet ultimately loving portrait of Tammy Faye, who comes across as surprisingly sympathetic, a cheerful and irrepressible survivor of many calamities. … more less -
