Connected: An Autoblogography about Love, Death & Technology
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 03/12/2013 Rating PG Production Year: 2011 Run Time: 80 mins Released By: New Video Group, Inc. In this documentary, filmmaker Tiffany Shlain examines how the Internet and social networking are not only changing the way we communicate but how we see the world around us, and the global impact that's being felt as a result. Using animation and archival material, Shlain offers a witty but thoughtful look at the paradoxical human desire for both independence and contact with others, and how the ease and speed of new communication is bringing about a change in out perceptions that's not just an evolution of societal norms but may be creating a fundamental shift in the way our brains process information. At the same time, Shlain explains how her father's battle with cancer upended her own notions of human connections, and her belief that 21st century humans need to strive not for independence but interdependence. CONNECTED: AN AUTOBLOGOGRAPHY ABOUT LOVE, DEATH AND TECHNOLOGY was an official selection at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. … more less -

Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 10/16/2012 Rating PG Production Year: 2011 Run Time: 87 mins Released By: Sony Pictures Home Proud son of Canada Neil Young returns home for a special concert in this documentary directed by Jonathan Demme. Raised in Winnipeg, Young was born in Toronto, and while touring North America in 2011 in support of his album LE NOISE, he played a solo show at Massey Hall in Toronto, one of the nation's most prestigious venues. Demme and a camera crew were on hand to document the performance (with the sound crew using a new high-resolution, digital-recording process designed under Young's supervision), and NEIL YOUNG JOURNEYS features the artist alone with his guitars and keyboards, playing a rich variety of material from his songbook, ranging from iconic hits to selections from LE NOISE and some brand-new material. Demme also joins Young for a road trip through Ontario, as he visits landmarks from his youth and recalls what once was as well as commenting on what is. War Room, The
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 03/20/2012 Rating PG Production Year: 1992 Run Time: 96 mins Released By: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment/Image The inimitable "ragin' Cajun" James Carville and his preppy pundit sidekick George Stephanopoulos are in rare form here as Bill Clinton's top campaign strategists. Together, Carville and Stephanopoulos coin resonant campaign witticisms replete with biting commentary on the Bush administration's outmoded leadership and management. With their media finesse, both men adroitly deflect the slanderous remarks thrown Clinton's way, thereby launching him into the White House--in this textbook of modern political tactics--from their strategists' holy ground, better known as the War Room. The film is directed by rockumentarian D.A. Pennebaker (DON'T LOOK BACK). … more less -
Elephant in the Living Room, The
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 02/07/2012 Rating PG Production Year: 2010 Run Time: 96 mins Released By: Millennium Entertainment "You can buy a cobra, but you can't buy common sense," says Tim Harrison, and he knows something about the subject. Harrison is a policeman, paramedic, and firefighter who has become an expert on dealing with exotic pets when they break free or turn on their owners. It's estimated that 15,000 lions, tigers, and other large cats are kept as pets in the United States, and while many are well cared for, some are purchased by people who are unaware of the danger and responsibility of caring for a predatory animal, and Harrison has also been forced to deal with bears, alligators, and large snakes that were adopted as pets and later became a danger to the community. Adding to a difficult situation is inconsistent regulation of exotic pet ownership, which makes it easier to own a tiger than a puppy in some territories. Filmmaker Michael Webber examines the trading of exotic pets in America and Tim Harrison's work with animals in the documentary THE ELEPHANT IN THE LIVING ROOM. The film also offers the perspective of Terry Brumfield, a man who struggled with depression for years before developing a close relationship with a pair of lions he adopted. THE ELEPHANT IN THE LIVING ROOM was named best documentary at the 2010 Traverse City Film Festival. … more less -
Thunder Soul
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 01/31/2012 Rating PG Production Year: 2010 Run Time: 88 mins Released By: Miramax Lionsgate Most fans of classic soul and funk don't spend much time listening to high school bands, but mention the Kashmere Stage Band and they'll sit up and take notice. In the 1970s, the jazz band at Houston, Texas' Kashmere High School was one of the best in the nation, and even scored regional hits with their recordings. Comprised of students from one of Houston's roughest neighborhoods, the Kashmere Stage Band was the brainchild of Conrad O. Johnson Sr., the school's band director who replaced the band's staid repertoire with a mix of lively jazz and funk tunes and current R&B favorites, and instilled a powerful work ethic in his students that turned the ensemble into an award winner. Johnson, known to his students as "Prof," transformed an otherwise ordinary band into something ground-breaking, and in the documentary THUNDER SOUL, filmmaker Mark Landsman offers a telling profile of Johnson and his band, featuring photos and footage of the band in their heyday as well as interviews from a recent reunion in which the Kashmere alumni paid tribute to Prof with their first concert in decades. THUNDER SOUL received its world premiere at the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival. … more less -

Naqoyqatsi
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 06/14/2011 Rating PG Production Year: 2002 Run Time: 87 mins Released By: Miramax Lionsgate With a pulsing Philip Glass soundtrack graced by the beautiful cello music of Yo-Yo Ma, Godfrey Reggio's NAQOYQATSI is the final installment of his Qatsi trilogy, which also includes KOYAANISQATSI and POWAQQATSI. In this film, computer-enhanced imagery rolls across the screen to the tune of the Glass concert music. NAQOYQATSI makes a departure from the previous films, which centered on the often cruel but always fascinating struggle for survival on Earth. This film focuses mostly on technology, industry, and our increasingly machine-operated world, focusing on the United States. Not only are its images largely computer-generated, the film is in itself about computer-generated images. Strings of numbers swirl into a tunnel of black and green code, rainbow-colored Windows icons flash across the screen, and a glowing computerized globe twirls in programmed perfection. More natural imagery, such as a horse running, oceans waves crashing, or soldiers sounding off in formation, is displayed in computer-edited negative. While the visuals start to look like stock photography, their generic nature communicates another message about the narrowing of our vision as technology and industry facilitate the conversion to a more efficient, systemized, productivity driven global society. … more less -

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 05/04/2010 Rating PG Production Year: 2003 Run Time: 86 mins Released By: Dreamworks Cast: Brad Pitt, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michelle Pfeiffer, Joseph Fiennes, Dennis Haysbert This rousing spectacle from Dreamworks follows Sinbad (Brad Pitt) and his band of pirates, who rob and pilfer their way through ancient times. Naturally this rogue will be redeemed, and the wheels go into motion when the Book of Peace, a hot property guarded by his good friend Proteus (Joseph Fiennes) and wanted by Eris, the evil goddess of chaos (Michelle Pfeiffer), winds up stolen. Sinbad is sent on a journey to return the book to its rightful owner, which means sailing to the uncharted waters of Eris' kingdom, through oceans laden with monsters and dangers at every turn. Stowing away for the ride is Proteus' beautiful and spunky fiancée Marina (Catherine Zeta Jones). Her presence allows for plenty of bickering and tortured romance in between the suspense and action-packed set pieces, which involve (among other things) tentacled sea serpents, sharks, and ghostly sirens. The animation is stunning: CGI effects merge with conventional 2D animation for ravishing, almost 3-D results. Pfeiffer has fun hamming to heights not seen since she played Cat Woman in BATMAN RETURNS, and adults will definitely relish the film's PG rating, which allows for a smidgeon more sensuality and violence than usual. The clever script by John Logan (GLADIATOR) provides such a wealth of jaw-dropping spectacle, cathartic action, and cheeky humor that the whole family should find SINBAD a fun voyage. … more less -

Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 10/21/2008 Rating PG Production Year: 2008 Run Time: 95 mins Released By: Universal Music & Video Distribution Cast: Ben Stein, Richard Dawkins Though Ben Stein is perhaps most famous for his sleep-inducing drone in FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF or for his eponymous game show, he is also a highly regarded New York Times columnist and was a speechwriter for both Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford during their presidencies. For EXPELLED: NO INTELLIGENCE ALLOWED, he needs all his powers of persuasion as he calls attention to the plight of exiled scientists and professors. In this documentary, Stein travels the world and speaks to men and women who have lost their jobs and their standings in the scientific world because of their association with intelligent design. EXPELLED uses the Berlin Wall as a metaphor and asserts that these people have been unjustly ousted, merely for speaking their minds. It carefully explains the differences between creationism and intelligent design and demonstrates that the latter is a belief held by people of all deity-based faiths, not just Christianity. It also devotes time to the connections between Darwinism and Hitler's regime. The film's climax features Stein going head-to-head with Richard Dawkins, a renowned atheist and author of the bestseller THE GOD DELUSION. Obviously, neither man budges in his firmly held beliefs, but it's fascinating to watch a debate between two undeniably intelligent men, regardless of whose side you're on. EXPELLED doesn't spend most of its time debating intelligent design and evolution. Instead it focuses largely on how the debate itself and its proponents have been ignored or pushed out of classrooms and academia. Filmmaker Nathan Frankowski inserts both original animations and clips of famous films (including PLANET OF THE APES and THE WIZARD OF OZ) to further illustrate his point. Though critics may find fault with EXPELLED for its one-sidedness, it's no more biased than any of Michael Moore's critically lauded documentaries. … more less -
11th Hour, The
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 04/08/2008 Rating PG Production Year: 2007 Run Time: 124 mins Released By: Warner Home Video Cast: Mikhail Gorbachev, Stephen Hawking, Andrew Weil Environmental documentary 11th HOUR resides at the polar opposite of escapist summer fare, its mission to firmly confront viewers about the indelible human footprint that humans have left on this planet, and the catastrophic effects of environmental neglect and abuse. Produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, and ably directed by Nadia Conners and Leila Conners Peterson, the documentary doesn't get much fancier than talking heads, news footage, and the occasional animated illustration, but its message is potent and delivered effectively. The first hour of the film is essentially a horror story, recounting the myriad sins perpetrated against the environment (pollution, deforestation, over-mining resources), the reasons behind it (corporate greed, faulty public policy, bad leadership, ignorance), and what it means for the human race. Thankfully, the last third of the movie tilts the mood upward, with a spirited discussion of solutions, offered by a crack team of scientists, designers, and thinkers. Stirring visions of alternate energy sources, diversified transportation, enlightened governmental agendas, sustainable homes and cities, and, most importantly, more conscious consumer choices leave viewers with the palpable feeling that change is both necessary and possible. If the "eleventh hour" for our planet is drawing near, this admirable film points confidently towards a new dawn. … more less -

Shark Tale
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 08/23/2005 Rating PG Production Year: 2004 Run Time: 90 mins Released By: Paramount Home Entertainment Cast: Will Smith, Renée Zellweger, Jack Black, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro Will Smith brings hip-hop zest to the voice of Oscar, a fast-talking everyfish who rejects his life at the whale wash and longs for fortune and fame in this animated film from Dreamworks. A combination of FINDING NEMO and GOODFELLAS, here sharks are old-school gangsters who prey on the local citizenry and hang out in the wreck of the Titanic. Martin Scorsese does the voice of Mr. Sykes, Oscar's blowfish boss, who owes head Shark Don Lino (Robert De Niro) a lot of clams. Don Lino wants to turn over his reign to his two sons, but youngest Lenny (Jack Black) is a closet vegetarian. The plot thickens when Oscar takes credit for the accidental death of Lenny's brother, and suddenly finds the fame and fortune he's been seeking, only it's based on the lie that he's "the shark slayer." It's tough not to like this spunky fish story, especially with Scorsese and De Niro verbally one-upping each other in some hilarious bits. Also noteworthy: a pair of hilariously mellow Rastafarian jellyfish (Ziggy Marley and Doug E. Doug) and Peter Falk as an old Tiger Shark who hangs around the Titanic crooning "My Heart Will Go On." Renee Zellweger and Angelina Jolie are the females--one pure of heart, one a "fish fatale"-- battling over Oscar's affection. In addition to all that, there should be enough goofy humor, action, and goofing to keep the kids riveted. … more less -
