Tell No One
Genre: Foreign Films Release Date: 12/04/2012 Rating NR Production Year: 2008 Run Time: 125 mins Released By: Music Box Films Cast: Francois Cluzet, Kristin Scott Thomas, Marina Hands, Marie-Josee Croze, André Dussollier TELL NO ONE starts off innocently enough: sunlight streams through the trees at a gorgeous summer home as an Otis Redding song plays. But the ominous title is apt: the events in this French thriller based a Harlan Coben novel soon turn dark. Happily married couple Alex (François Cluzet) and Margot (Marie-Josée Croze) go for a swim, but their idyllic evening is interrupted by a brutal attack. Alex is knocked unconscious, and his wife is murdered. Almost a decade later, that night still haunts Alex. He receives an email pointing him to a link to a live webcam, where he sees a woman who looks remarkably like his dead wife turn and stare into the camera. Hope and confusion mount, but a discovery at the crime scene causes Alex to become the prime suspect in his wife's death, a murder that was thought to have been solved years ago. When TELL NO ONE played in its native France, it picked up four César awards, the country's equivalent of the Oscar, and it's easy to see why. Director Guillame Canet (who also plays a small role in the film) has crafted a taut, well-told film. TELL NO ONE's narrative journey is filled with numerous twists and turns, but the audience is content to be along for the ride with Canet at the wheel. There are elements of Hitchcock and THE FUGITIVE, but the film never feels like a rip-off of the classics. It's a gripping, entertaining tale that features solid performances, especially from Canet (L'ENFER) and Kristin Scott Thomas in a supporting role. … more less -

Genre: Foreign Films Release Date: 05/17/2011 Rating R Production Year: 2008 Run Time: 107 mins Released By: Lionsgate Cast: Espen Klouman Høiner, Anders Danielsen Lie, Viktoria Winge, Magnus Williamson, Pål Stokka First time feature director Joachim Trier crafts a dazzling debut in REPRISE, an inventively constructed tale about the hard truths that divide creative ambition and personal authenticity. The film opens with childhood friends Erik (Espen Klouman Hoiner) and Phillip (Anders Danielsen Lie) preparing to submit their first novels. They imagine a whirlwind future in which they achieve the reclusive cult status of their favorite novelist. In truth, Erik's novel is rejected while Phillip's creates an immediate literary sensation. But the sudden notoriety and his obsessive emotions towards girlfriend Kari (Viktoria Winge) cause Phillip to have a mental breakdown. When Phillip is released from treatment the two friends find that they have traded fortunes, as Erik achieves his own success while Phillip struggles to piece together his fractured life. But Erik's fame also comes at a price, exposing his personal deficiencies and limitations. This will force the two friends to choose between asserting their creative liberty and honestly engaging the complexity of life. Lauded at numerous international film festivals, REPRISE jumps back and forth in time to show how the past is always present in our words and deeds. Trier and his talented ensemble are similarly skillful in showing how personal dreams and fantasies become the masks we must discard in order to reveal our true selves. … more less -
Barbarian Invasions, The
Genre: Foreign Films Release Date: 05/17/2011 Rating Production Year: 2003 Run Time: 99 mins Released By: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment Cast: Remy Girard, Stephane Rousseau, Marie-Josee Croze, Dorothee Berryman, Johanne-Marie Tremblay Denys Arcand delivers a beautiful film with THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS, the story of a man on his deathbed who is joined by his distant son and all his closest friends throughout the last--wonderful and loving--days of his life. In this follow-up to 1986's THE DECLINE OF THE AMERICAN EMPIRE, the same characters reappear. Now Remy (Remy Girard), the horny history teacher, is hospitalized and in pain. But at the urging of his wife, Louise (Dorothee Berryman), Remy's son Sebastian (Stephane Rousseau) comes to his aid. Sebastian is a banker who tosses cash around, paying hospital administrators, union workers, Remy's former students, and even a local heroin dealer, to help make his father's last days as comfortable as possible. Along with this financial commitment also comes love, and the relationship between this father and son is touching. The sometimes raucous and comic mood of the film, generated by perverted stories and silly jokes, stands in striking contrast to this serious story of life, sickness, and dying. But it is that balance, kept neatly in check by Arcand, that makes THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS a truly great cinematic feat, as well as a thoroughly enjoyable viewing experience. … more less -

Flower of My Secret, The
Genre: Foreign Films Release Date: 11/03/2009 Rating R Production Year: 1996 Run Time: 100 mins Released By: Sony Pictures Home Cast: Marisa Paredes, Carmen Elías, Juan Echanove THE FLOWER OF MY SECRET is a surprisingly restrained film (no drag queens, raunchy sex, or murders) from Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, and is considered one of his best. Romance novelist Leo (Marisa Paredes) experiences a nervous breakdown when she realizes her U.N. peacekeeper husband (Imanol Arias) no longer loves her, and the morbid novel she has just finished will never be accepted by her profit-minded publisher. Depressed, alcoholic, and suicidal, she begins to write for a Spanish newspaper under a pseudonym, starting with a scathing critique of her previous, best-selling work. The paper's hard-drinking, overweight editor Ángel (Juan Echanove) falls in love with Leo, never realizing the "flower of her secret"--that her other pen name is Amanda Gris, and that she is the writer of the romance novels he loves. The delightful cast includes Rossy De Palma and Chus Lampreave--hilarious as Leo's constantly bickering sister and mother--and Carmen Elías as her best friend, a woman who trains doctors in soliciting organ donations from grieving relatives. Almodóvar fills this beautiful film with sharply realized scenes, rich helpings of Spanish flavor, and a vibrant compassion for his characters. … more less
