Free Radicals: A History of Experimental Film
Genre: Musical & Performing Arts Release Date: 03/12/2013 Rating NR Production Year: 2010 Run Time: 82 mins Released By: Lorber Films It wasn't more than a couple decades after the invention of motion pictures that a number of artists began embracing cinema as a medium of creative expression, rather than just a tool for narrative storytelling or recording events. In the 1920s, European artists influenced by the abstract and surrealist movements began making films that applied a new visual and philosophical perspective to the moving image, and after World War II the experimental film movement began to grow in the United States, as directors such as Stan Brakhage, Ken Jacobs, Jonas Mekas and Robert Breer created works that attracted the attention of adventurous cineastes. Pip Chodorov was raised by parents who were passionate followers of experimental cinema and became friends with some of the leading underground filmmakers of the day; his documentary FREE RADICALS: A STORY OF EXPERIMENTAL FILM offers a look into the history of experimental filmmaking, including interviews with some of the key figures in the movement (including the last interview Brakhage would ever give) and lengthy excerpts from a handful of key films. FREE RADICALS was an official selection at the American Film Institute's 2010 AFI Fest. … more less -

History of Israeli Cinema, A
Genre: Musical & Performing Arts Release Date: 01/29/2013 Rating NR Production Year: 2009 Run Time: 119 mins Released By: Kino on Video While Israel is a nation that has been in the center of the public eye ever since its birth, its national cinema has received relatively little attention, and only a handful of Israeli films have received extensive distribution outside the country. Raphael Nadjari at once addresses the story of filmmaking in Israel, the politics and aesthetics behind Israeli cinema, and how the nation's film industry has grown outside the interference of the west in this documentary. A HISTORY OF ISRAELI CINEMA is divided into two parts; the first half covers the years 1932 to 1978, beginning with Zionist films shot in Palestine by Jewish directors from Europe, and the second part is devoted to 1978-2005, when filmmakers embraced what locals critics called "The New Sensibility" and features with brave and defiant Sephardic heroes gave way to more nuanced fare dealing with the spiritual, political and ethical grey areas of a nation of immigrants. Along with extensive clips from a broad variety of key films, the documentary also includes interviews with noted film critic, actors and directors who talk about cinema and its role in a nation whose story is still being written. A HISTORY OF THE ISRAELI CINEMA received its world premiere at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival. … more less -
Quadrophenia
Genre: Musical & Performing Arts Release Date: 08/28/2012 Rating NR Production Year: 1979 Run Time: 120 mins Released By: Criterion Collection Cast: Phil Daniels, Sting, Mark Wingett, Philip Davis, Ray Winstone After essentially inventing the rock opera format, The Who followed the cult favorite TOMMY and numerous aborted rock-opera projects with the album QUADROPHENIA. This film version, directed by Franc Roddam, illuminated the feelings of disillusionment and confusion evident in songs such as "Love Reign O'er Me," "Dr. Jimmy," "The Real Me," and "Bellboy." The film follows the bitter battle between the Mods and the Rockers, two rival biker gangs. The story is seen through the eyes of Jimmy Cooper (Phil Daniels), an angry young man whose hatred of authority and mediocrity is matched only by his passion for rhythm and blues music. When the Mods and Rockers both arrive in Brighton on holiday a riot breaks out, landing Jimmy in prison with Ace (Sting in his acting debut), the idolized leader of the Mods. Jimmy returns to London where his parents kick him out and he loses his job. He then discovers Ace is working as a bootlicking bellboy, leaving Jimmy confused and enraged. He hijacks a scooter and rides to the cliff tops that act as a highly symbolic backdrop for the film's bleak conclusion. … more less -

American: The Bill Hicks Story
Genre: Musical & Performing Arts Release Date: 06/07/2011 Rating NR Production Year: 2009 Run Time: 101 mins Released By: BBC Video Bill Hicks was a comedian, though that term hardly describes the full range and impact of his work. Hicks used comedy a vehicle to express both rage and hope, to satirize what he saw as faulty in contemporary society and to promote his singular notion of a better world. Growing up in Houston, TX, Hicks began performing at the age of 15, and after earning a large and loyal following in Texas, he moved to L.A. and began working the comedy circuit nationwide. As Hicks maintained a punishing touring schedule (often performing 250 to 300 nights a year), he kept honing and refining his act, combining acidic political and social commentary with tales of his sexual obsessions, surreal visions of the world around him, and experiences with drugs. In 1990, Hicks performed in the United Kingdom for the first time, and there he became a star, though he failed to attract the same sort of audience in the United States. A few years later, Hicks seemed on the verge of a commercial breakthrough in America when he learned he had a rare and virulent form of cancer; he died on February 24, 1994, at the age of 32. Filmmaker Matt Harlock and Paul Thomas chronicle the life, art, and philosophy of a singular performer with the documentary AMERICAN: THE BILL HICKS STORY. Featuring interviews with Hicks' closest friends and family members, the film uses digital animation to bring his standup routines to life and create a visual complement to his comedic vision. AMERICAN: THE BILL HICKS STORY received its world premiere at the 2009 BFI London Film Festival. … more less -

Patti Smith - Dream of Life
Genre: Musical & Performing Arts Release Date: 01/13/2009 Rating NR Production Year: 2008 Cast: Sam Shepard, Tom Verlaine, Philip Glass, Flea Less a documentary than a slightly trippy home movie, Steven Sebring's DREAM OF LIFE gathers about 10 recent years' worth of footage of the rock icon Patti Smith: in performance, lolling on Baudelaire's grave, protesting the war in Iraq, strolling Coney Island with her children (who are so physically and spiritually similar to the artist as to appear almost as fractal emanations of her), jamming on acoustic guitars with old friend and former lover Sam Shepard, and chatting openly to the camera without a trace of self-consciousness. On the soundtrack is the elegiac narration by the artist herself, along with her incantatory poetry and music. The absence of portentous voiceovers or aggrandizing talking heads underscores the intimacy and humble quality of the production, although the plethora of cameo shots of members of rock music royalty indicates the wide-ranging influence Smith has had since the mid-1970s. The narrative is not exactly linear, but Smith and Sebring do take us on a biographical journey, highlighting the 1990s and '00s especially, the time of her widowhood and subsequent comeback to music. Longing, sadness, and grief (for her beloved husband, Fred Smith, as well as for her brother, her parents, and her friend Robert Mapplethorpe) hang in the air, but Smith's personality is so winningly girlish and full of present-moment wonderment that the sadness is poignant and life-affirming rather than depressing. The film--perhaps a little long at two hours but still a visual and musical feast--is a celebration of the redemptive power of song and poetry, of being awake to the beauty all around, and it is a tonic for the soul. … more less -

METALOCALYPSE is full of brutal cartoon violence (it's not unusual for audience members to die at Deathklok shows) that has won over countless fans from the heavy metal community.
