Inconvenient Truth, An
Genre: Musical & Performing Arts Release Date: 05/21/2013 Rating PG Production Year: 2006 Run Time: 96 mins Released By: Warner Home Video Cast: Al Gore A movie based on a PowerPoint presentation by a former presidential candidate may not sound exciting, but once AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH hits its stride viewers may be surprised how compelling the subject matter proves to be. While many high-ranking political figures continue to argue about global warming, Al Gore has plunged headlong into a serious wake-up call for the planet with a series of lectures about the problem. It's on one of these lectures that this movie from director Davis Guggenheim is based. Guggenheim breaks up Gore's delivery by illustrating his points with film footage, much of which features the former Democratic nominee exploring the globe as he examines the effects of global warming. Gore's speech is neatly divided between calm recitations of the facts about the issue and several stories of a personal nature. His skills as an orator are considerable, and it's hard not to be alarmed by most of what he has to say. Indeed, as Gore relates tales of melting polar icecaps, rising global temperatures, and the reluctance of political leaders to do something about the problem, the film takes on an air of hopelessness and doom, especially as no easy solutions are offered. Gore's advice is for individuals to take steps to reduce their own inadvertent poisoning of the atmosphere, and to persuade others to do likewise. It's a powerful message, and one that is likely to remain in non-cynical minds long after the film comes to a conclusion. … more less -

Cabaret
Genre: Musical & Performing Arts Release Date: 02/05/2013 Rating PG Production Year: 1972 Run Time: 124 mins Released By: Warner Home Video Cast: Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey, Michael York, Helmut Griem, Fritz Wepper The final shot of the hit film CABARET is a Nazi meeting reflected in a mirror, providing the chilling historical subtext for this groundbreaking musical movie, set in prewar Berlin. Not since GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) had Hollywood produced a more successful film. CABARET was a convention-shattering story that dealt with themes like bisexuality that were still under the radar in the US. Additionally, CABARET made the enormously talented Liza Minnelli an American icon. Minnelli plays Sally Bowles, an aspiring singer and dancer. The main plot revolves around her relationship with two different men and her life as a singer at the Kit Kat Klub. The film utilizes the traditional conventions of American musical theater while adding in the fiendishly painted Master of Ceremonies (Joel Grey) who comments on the proceedings through song and dance. Director Bob Fosse showcases the range of his vision as a director of stage and screen, serving as both choreographer and musical director. Based on the Kander-Ebb musical from John van Druten's play I AM A CAMERA (which, in turn, was derived from Christopher Isherwood's novel GOODBYE TO BERLIN), CABARET was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won eight, making it one of the most acclaimed films in movie history. … more less -
Pina
Genre: Musical & Performing Arts Release Date: 01/22/2013 Rating PG Production Year: 2011 Run Time: 103 mins Released By: Criterion Collection Pina Bausch was one of Europe's most celebrated choreographers, fusing the discipline of ballet with the freedom of modern dance and approaching her material in a bold, innovative and emotionally compelling manner. Bausch made the acquaintance of German filmmaker Wim Wenders, and he began making a documentary about her life and work. The focus of Wenders' film shifted dramatically in 2009, when Bausch was diagnosed with cancer and died only a few days later. Wenders considered abandoning the project, but after meeting with the members of her dance company, Tanztheater Wuppertal, Wenders chose instead to create a cinematic interpretation of Bausch's art, preserving several of her pieces and the work of her dancers for the ages. PINA is the result, a performance film that takes several of Bausch's dance pieces into the open and celebrates the beauty and physicality of dance; the film was shot in 3D to give a greater sense of the power and interplay of bodies in motion. PINA received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. … more less -

Being Elmo
Genre: Musical & Performing Arts Release Date: 04/03/2012 Rating PG Production Year: 2011 Run Time: 76 mins Released By: New Video Group, Inc. Most American parents are very much aware of Elmo, the child-like fuzzy red Muppet on SESAME STREET who has become a favorite among the show's youthful audience. But far fewer people know the name Kevin Clash, the puppeteer who brings Elmo to life, and filmmaker Constance Marks introduces viewers to the man behind the Muppet in this documentary. Clash, a big and burly-looking man with a large reserve of shyness, was born and raised in Baltimore and was something of a loner in his youth, but found a way to express himself when he discovered puppetry. In his teens, Clash began building his own puppets (once destroying one of his father's coats to use as material for his latest project), and showed a remarkable talent for the art. Clash worked on a variety of television shows and movies before being hired to work on SESAME STREET, where he formulated his most famous character. BEING ELMO: A PUPPETEER'S JOURNEY offers a backstage look at Clash's life and times, a look into his working methods, and insight into how he informs Elmo's personality and uses the character to send a positive message to the world. BEING ELMO received its world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. … more less -

Walt and El Grupo
Genre: Musical & Performing Arts Release Date: 11/30/2010 Rating PG Production Year: 2007 Run Time: 107 mins Released By: Walt Disney Home Video Theodore Thomas, son of the late Walt Disney Studios animator Frank Thomas (1912-2004) and director of the acclaimed 1995 documentary FRANK AND OLLIE, helms this second foray into Disney history, WALT & EL GRUPO (2007). The subject this time lies somewhat outside the boundaries of Disney animation and rests on an unusual footnote: in 1941, Walt Disney personally led a "goodwill tour" and research expedition of South America, with a team of animators in tow whom he collectively christened "El Grupo." The voyage transcended passing personal interest on the part of the animators; its residual effects can be seen in several Latin-themed Disney projects -- notably, SALUDOS AMIGOS (1942) and THE THREE CABALLEROS (1945), both of which won Oscars, and other efforts designed to support the Good Neighbor Policy of the United States. With WALT & EL GRUPO, Theodore Thomas and his wife, Kuniko Okubo, combine rare, unseen 16 mm home movie footage of the original trip (held in the Disney vaults for years) with footage from their own trip through South America that retraces the Disney animators' original journey -- contrasting 1941 footage with glimpses of the same locales, shot 60 years later. On the soundtrack, Thomas and Okubo overlay reminiscences by the original travelers, taken from journals and letters and read by family members. … more less -
Waking Sleeping Beauty
Genre: Musical & Performing Arts Release Date: 11/30/2010 Rating PG Production Year: 2009 Run Time: 86 mins Released By: Walt Disney Home Video Walt Disney Pictures has been the leading name in animated filmmaking since the 1930s, but the studio's crown was looking more than a little tarnished in the 1980s after a series of expensive commercial and critical disappointments such as THE FOX AND THE HOUND, THE BLACK CAULDRON, and THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE. At that time, a handful of Disney executives were questioning the wisdom of continuing to make animated films, as the company was making more money in live-action movies, theme parks, and television. That changed when Roy Disney -- Walt's nephew and the last figure from the studio's Golden Age management team still on board -- teamed up with newly hired studio executives Michael D. Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg to restore their reputation for both quality and commercial appeal. With the success of WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT in 1988, the team sparked a new interest in animation on the big screen, and a string of smash hits that began with THE LITTLE MERMAID and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST launched a new era of both acclaim and box-office success for the company. But those successes didn't come without behind-the-scenes conflict, and Don Hahn, a longtime producer at Disney, offers an inside look at the creative squabbles and battles amongst the management that came during Disney's climb back to the top of Hollywood's mountain in the documentary WAKING SLEEPING BEAUTY. Along with behind-the-scenes footage and rare personal artwork created by the studio's animation staff (including some unflattering cartoons of their bosses), the film includes interviews with many key figures of this era in Disney history, and several people who enjoyed greater success after leaving the company, such as Tim Burton and John Lasseter. WAKING SLEEPING BEAUTY was an official selection at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. … more less -

Let's Spend the Night Together
Genre: Musical & Performing Arts Release Date: 11/02/2010 Rating PG Production Year: 1982 Run Time: 87 mins Released By: Lionsgate Cast: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, Ron Wood In the tradition of Hollywood directors taking on the task of documenting rock & roll events--like Martin Scorsese with THE LAST WALTZ or Jonathan Demme with STOP MAKING SENSE--Hal Ashby's LET'S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER is a record of the Rolling Stones' 1981 U.S. tour. Although it was filmed at just three stops, all large outdoor venues, it beautifully captures the spirit of the shows and the hard work that goes into staging a Stones concert. The Stones themselves don't break new ground in personal revelations, but they do live up to expectations. Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman tend to fade into the background, Keith Richards is otherworldly, and Mick Jagger struts and poses. But Ashby wanted to show the vastness of the enterprise, not just the performers. His use of sweeping helicopter shots of the crowds is balanced by equal attention to the small details of the work of the roadies and technicians. The songs are familiar, recorded in stereo surround sound, and performed with the electric intensity expected of the Rolling Stones, arguably the world's greatest band. Ashby also opens things up by including a variety of newsreel footage collected over the 20 years the band has been together, some of which, including burning Buddhist monks in Vietnam, still startles, giving a historical feel to an otherwise fairly straightforward concert film. … more less -

Soles, Ramones, Vincent Van Patten, Mary Woronov, Paul Bartel In this campy, classic musical tribute to the rock legends the Ramones, the students of Vince Lombardi High School are a wild and rebellious bunch who are sick of sitting in school--they want to go see the Ramones in concert. With the lowest academic scores in Southern California and pathetic athletic teams that haven't won a game in years, the school's last three principals had nervous breakdowns and were committed to the funny farm. But that's no concern to the kids, who just want to rock. Riff Randall, the leader of the frisky students, writes the song "Rock 'N' Roll High School" and leads a brigade of her peers to a Ramones concert. However, when a fierce new principal cracks the whip and attempts to silence the rock music by burning stacks of the students' records, a riot breaks out. The Ramones arrive at school and join forces with the students to take over the school and, in a glorious exclamation of victory, burn it down.
