Founded in part by Amadou Gallo Fall, who works in scouting and international affairs for the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, the Seeds Academy is an unusual school in Senegal that recruits students based on both their academic abilities and their athletic skills. Along with providing a quality education, the school helps students find basketball scholarships at American schools, and successful graduates help other Seeds students use their talents to better their communities and earn a more promising future. Filmmaker Anne Buford offers a look into life at the Seeds Academy and its students in the documentary ELEVATE, as four young men from rural Senegal -- Assane, Aziz, Byago and Dethie -- leave their homes and make their way to the United States, where they must not only excel in school and on the basketball court in pursuit of a career in pro ball, but serve as unofficial ambassadors from Western Africa, countering the many negative stereotypes held against their people and their homeland. Morning Light
Genre: Sports/Recreation Release Date: 06/16/2009 Rating PG Production Year: 2008 Run Time: 98 mins Released By: Buena Vista Home Entertainment Cast: Chris Branning, Graham Brant-Zawadzki, Chris Clark, Charlie Enright, Jesse Fielding The upbeat maritime documentary MORNING LIGHT is the brainchild of writer-director Mark Monroe and ocean-racing enthusiast Roy E. Disney. Under the watchful guidance of the former Disney exec, 15 young adults were given the chance of a lifetime to compete against the world's best sailors in a 2,500-mile open-ocean race from California to Hawaii (known as the TRANSPAC). The story follows their six months of intensive training, team selection, and a play-by-play of the race itself. Packed with fast-paced action and vibrant cinematography, the film is a stunning visual treat punched up by adventurous camera angles and gorgeous panoramic shots. While the setup of 15 participants hedges closely to reality-TV-style back-story format, MORNING LIGHT admirably avoids the pitfalls associated with that genre's focus on mean-spirited competition and backstabbing. Instead, the presentation is genuine and sincere, if at times a bit too earnest. But the film seems intent to win on its own terms: no artificially heightened sense of drama needed. Most remarkable is the unshakable camaraderie that's formed by these 15 high-spirited young men and women. As they perservere through great emotional and physical obstacles to overcome the treacherous high seas, their story offers an inspirational tale of sacrifice, teamwork, and sportsmanship. … more less -

He presents a wide range of surfers, from superstars (Kelly Slater, Laird Hamilton, Keala Kennelly) to amateurs, including an old man who hasn't missed a day of surfing in over 25 years. The locations include such unknown surf spots as Wisconsin, Texas, and even Ireland, to the more widely regarded waters of Hawaii, California, and Australia. Brown wisely saves the best for last, as a group of incredibly bold surfers journey out to sea to test out their skills on 60-foot-plus waves. But what makes STEP INTO LIQUID such a vital experience is its overall positive energy. This is a film that doesn't just celebrate surfing; it celebrates life. … more less
