Earth
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 09/01/2009 Rating NR Production Year: 2009 Run Time: 90 mins Released By: Buena Vista Home Entertainment Cast: James Earl Jones Partially constructed from the groundbreaking BBC and Discovery Channel television series PLANET EARTH, EARTH is a ravishing and often gut-wrenching tale of natural survival and beauty. Five years in the making (including 250 days of aerial footage shot from planes, helicopters, and two-man balloons) and narrated by actor James Earl Jones, EARTH follows the trials of three families of polar bears, elephants, and whales. Though separated by seasons and continents, each family will cross great lengths and confront numerous hardships: for the Arctic polar bears, it is an increasingly warming planet that melts the ice they need for a hunting platform; for the African elephants, hot desert conditions and hungry predators will stand in the way of reaching a lush delta; and for the Pacific humpback whales, their Antarctic migration will be fraught with rough waters and great white sharks. Along the way, EARTH takes us on a global tour of nature in all its colorful splendor and harrowing moments--from windswept tundra to teeming rainforests, from cheetahs running down their prey to ducklings taking first flight. And as each family struggles towards their much-needed feeding grounds, directors Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield ultimately show us that nature can be equally giving and unforgiving. Educational but never preachy, EARTH is an unprecedented invitation for adults and children alike to experience the everyday natural wonders that deserve our awe and safeguarding. … more less -

Even more remarkably, police investigators determined that Vincent had been lying dead in her flat for close to three years, with the lights on, the television running, and her unopened mail littering the floor. How did a seemingly healthy woman of 38 suddenly die in her apartment? More importantly, how could Vincent have been missing for three years without friends or neighbors taking note of it? Filmmaker Carol Morley became fascinated with Vincent's story and began an investigation of her own. The documentary DREAMS OF A LIFE is the product of Morley's efforts to reveal just who Joyce Vincent was, who her friends and family were, and how a beautiful and talented woman could so readily fall off the radar of the people closest to her. DREAMS OF A LIFE received its world premiere at the 2011 London Film Festival. … more less -

Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 12/04/2012 Rating NR Production Year: 2011 Run Time: 85 mins Released By: Passion River Olga Nenya is a woman living in the Ukraine who has taken on a task most would never think of trying -- she's a foster mother who looks after 23 children, many of them the mixed-race offspring of African exchange students and local girls. In a community where people of color are still regarded with suspicion and a growing white-supremacist movement has taken root, Nenya's willingness to look after so many children, particularly given their race, is to be admired. However, while Nenya is a woman of great compassion, she's also one who believes in the collectivist philosophies of the old Soviet Union, and as her foster children grow up and embrace their own opinions, she often finds herself angry and at odds with the kids who still think of her as their mother. Filmmaker Julia Ivanova offers an insightful look into the life of Olga Nenya and her many children in the documentary FAMILY PORTRAIT IN BLACK AND WHITE, which was an official selection at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. … more less -

Gerrymandering
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 10/23/2012 Rating NR Production Year: 2009 Run Time: 77 mins Released By: Passion River Documentary filmmaker Jeff Reichert ponders the troubling prospect that elections in America are decided before the first vote is ever cast by examining how the framework of democracy provides politicians with an entirely legal means of controlling electoral outcomes. The MERRIAM-WEBSTER DICTIONARY definition of "gerrymandering" reads: "to divide a territorial unit into election districts to give one political party an electoral majority in a large number of districts while concentrating the voting strength of the opposition in as few districts as possible." As the debate surrounding the reliability of the electoral system rages, the question of how to ensure that the system is more accurate and accountable comes up time and again. Can that broken system ever be fixed? By posing that question, among many others, to governors, state representatives, Supreme Court justices, political strategists, party chairmen, scholars, and journalists, Reichert proposes that the fundamental democratic premise that voters actually choose their elected representative may be a falsehood implemented to create the illusion of democracy. … more less -
