Zoom
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 02/13/2007 Rating PG Production Year: 2006 Run Time: 88 mins Released By: Sony Pictures Home Cast: Tim Allen, Courteney Cox, Michael Cassidy, Rip Torn, Ryan Newman Peter Hewitt's (GARFIELD: THE MOVIE) family-friendly adventure film, ZOOM, stars Tim Allen as an aging former superhero who is reluctantly called back on the job. Years ago, Jack (Allen) was adopted for a government program that capitalized on the oddities of unusual children. Under the influence of super-strength-building Gamma rays, Jack became the lightning-fast Zoom, and joined the Zenith team, a group of other similarly cultivated superheroes that included his brother, Concussion (Kevin Zegers). But Concussion went bad, betrayed his fellows, and Zoom was the only one to survive; since then, he has rescinded his powers. Now the government, alarmed at Concussion's approach from another dimension, wants to put together another Zenith team with Jack as their leader. The officials, including Chevy Chase and Rip Torn, assemble a motley crew of youths that includes a six-year-old "princess" with superhuman strength (Ryan Newman), and an innocuous-looking chubby boy who can grow parts of his body at will (Spencer Breslin). Two teenagers (Michael Cassidy and Kate Mara) are also on hand, and they fall in love, while the initially reluctant Jack, who suffered much at the hands of the Zenith team and has since become bitter about the possibility of heroes, begins to open up to the kids. He also finds love with the bumbling, admiring child psychologist (Courtney Cox) who has been assigned to the case. Although the story is somewhat formulaic and the characters thinly drawn, the film's message comes across strongly: the qualities that make a misfit are the very ones that give strength. … more less -

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 12/01/2009 Rating PG Production Year: 2009 Run Time: 105 mins Released By: 20th Century Fox Cast: Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Owen Wilson, Hank Azaria, Robin Williams Shawn Levy (CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, JUST MARRIED) directs the sequel of his hit film NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM. Night guard Larry Daley (Ben Stiller), now a successful entrepreneur, returns to the Museum of Natural History to visit his friends--the exhibits that come to life at night--only to learn that they are being shipped off into deep storage at the Smithsonian Institution. To make matters worse, the exhibits at the Smithsonian, including the pharaoh Kahmunrah (Hank Azaria), are suddenly coming to life--and they aren’t at all happy about their new visitors. Determined to save his friends, Larry rushes to Washington, D.C., and makes his way into the inner workings of the largest museum complex in the world while Kahmunrah recruits the likes of Ivan the Terrible (Christopher Guest), Napoleon (Alain Chabat), and Al Capone (Jon Bernthal). Larry, meanwhile, finds himself with spunky Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams) as a co-conspirator and love interest, and General Custer (Bill Hader) leading the battle for the Smithsonian. The stakes are higher in this sequel, where even the paintings on the Smithsonian walls come to life at night. Stiller is his capable deadpan self as the now-successful Larry who finds purpose again while helping his friends, and Adams is spot-on as feisty, adventure-seeking Earhart, complete with period lingo. Azaria is a scene-stealer as Kahmunrah, who is menacing despite his lisp. Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan, Robin Williams, and Ricky Gervais also reprise their roles in this sequel, which is the first film to be shot at the Smithsonian. … more less -
Dumb and Dumber
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 08/29/2006 Rating NR Production Year: 1994 Cast: Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Lauren Holly, Karen Duffy, Mike Starr Lowbrow buffoonery hit commercial highs with 1994's DUMB AND DUMBER. Little does Lloyd know that Mary's in Aspen trying to locate her kidnapped husband. Soon the dimwitted pair have gotten mixed up in the crime, and their wacky exploits are leading the FBI straight to the crooks. The Farrelly Brothers are at the peak of their twisted craft with this gut-busting comedy. But between such gross-out gags as Hary's Exlax overdose and Lloyd's deliriously over-the-top dream sequence, it's really the chemistry between Carrey and Daniels--and the charming naiveté of these two dunces--that lend the film a disarming sweetness. … more less -

Role Models
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 03/10/2009 Rating R Production Year: 2008 Run Time: 201 mins Released By: Universal Studios Home Video Cast: Paul Rudd, Seann William Scott, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jane Lynch, Bobb'e J. Thompson Director David Wain (WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER) capably mixes the saucy and the sentimental in the bawdy boys-to-men comedy ROLE MODELS. Stuck-in-a-rut Danny Donahue (Paul Rudd) and womanizing man-child Wheeler (Seann William Scott) work together promoting Minotaur energy drink to high school students. But when Danny's girlfriend Beth (Elizabeth Banks) dumps him because he lacks maturity, his lashing out threatens to land him and Wheeler in jail. Their only way out is to act as mentors at Sturdy Wings, a Big Brother-esque organization run by reformed addict--and unrepentant flirt--Gayle Sweeny (Jane Lynch). There, Danny is paired with the decidedly dorky Augie (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) while Wheeler is the latest victim to take on foul-mouthed Ronnie (Bobb'e J. Thompson). After a bumpy beginning, both Danny and Wheeler connect with their kids over everything from sword-and-sorcery role playing to the chick-scoring power of the band Kiss. But when these two presumptive adults put their charges' well-being in jeopardy, they face both jail time and the loss of everyone's respect. With their own friendship on the brink of ruin, Danny and Wheeler--not to mention a little help from the magic of Kiss--must reach deep inside to prove to the world how responsible they can truly be. In the spirit of films like KNOCKED UP and THE 40-YEAR OLD VIRGIN, ROLE MODELS features a healthy dose of sharp humor and juvenile gags balanced by a feel-good message that growing up doesn't mean giving up what makes each of us special. … more less -

Baby Mama
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 09/09/2008 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 2008 Run Time: 99 mins Released By: Universal Studios Home Video Cast: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Greg Kinnear, Dax Shepard, Romany Malco Most romantic couples--onscreen or otherwise--would kill for the type of chemistry that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler share in the gyno-centric comedy BABY MAMA, even though the women are only playing friends. Fey stars as Kate, a 37-year-old vice president at an organic foods company whose womb starts a-kickin' every time she sees a baby. Though her career has kept her from marriage and children, she has decided that it's time for her to get pregnant. But multiple tries with in vitro fertilization leave her disappointed, and Kate turns to a surrogate mother. Enter Angie (Poehler), a high-school dropout desperate for the large check that comes with carrying someone's child. Though she agrees to be Kate's surrogate, it's clear that the women disagree on everything from music to the type of food Angie should be eating. When Angie leaves her apartment after a fight with her obnoxious common-law husband (Dax Shepard, EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH), she moves into Kate's posh Philadelphia apartment, and the women spend the rest of BABY MAMA alternately battling and bonding. Steve Martin appears in a small but enjoyable role as Kate's oily boss, and Oscar nominee Greg Kinnear gets good mileage out of playing her love interest. WEEDS star Romany Malco earns a bit more screen time--and plenty of laughs--as her over-involved doorman, but this is clearly Fey and Poehler's film. After several seasons of co-anchoring SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE's "Weekend Update" together, the pair is reunited, and it feels good--for both the talented actresses and the audience. BABY MAMA pays less attention to the serious issues of pregnancy and motherhood than its baby-driven contemporaries--JUNO, WAITRESS, and KNOCKED UP--but this is simply a comedy, and a very funny one, that succeeds on the merits of its two lead actresses and their comedic talents. … more less -
Knocked Up
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 09/25/2007 Rating NR Production Year: 2007 Cast: Katherine Heigl, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Jay Baruchel Katherine Heigl (GREY'S ANATOMY) and Seth Rogen star in this hilarious and touching comedy as two mismatched people brought together by a one-night-stand that results in an accidental pregnancy. Using many of the same actors from his previous film, THE 40-YEAR OLD VIRGIN, and his cult television series' UNDECLARED and FREAKS AND GEEKS, director Judd Apatow once again finds fresh humor in relationships and sex. Young, bright, and talented, Alison (Heigl) has everything going for her. After being promoted to an on-camera role at E! Television, Alison goes out to celebrate with her older sister, Debbie (Leslie Mann). Not long into the evening Debbie is called home to her kids, leaving Alison in the eager company of charming slacker Ben (Rogen). In the dark of the nightclub and in the ensuing drunk hours, Ben seems like a great guy. But in the sober light of day, Alison quickly discovers the man in her bed is nothing more than an overgrown child with no job, no money, and the social habits of a teenager. Brushing him off politely as a one-time affair, Alison goes on with her life, until two months later she realizes that the unthinkable has happened. Apatow establishes the differences between his protagonists early in the film, bringing their contrasting worlds to life with stellar performances by secondary characters. Paul Rudd has never been better in his role as Alison's bitter brother-in-law, whose somewhat dysfunctional marriage to Alison's feisty but insecure sister unfolds in parallel to Alison and Ben's story. Meanwhile, Ben's home resembles a frat house, and his friends (Jay Baruchel, Jason Segel, Jonah Hill, and Martin Starr), while hilarious, are hardly role models. KNOCKED UP will have audiences cracking up from start to finish, and it also deals with some serious issues about commitment, life choices, and becoming an adult. The film asks universal questions in a sweet and touching way, achieving a sad humor that distinguishes it from other films of its gen … more less -
