Genre: Comedies Release Date: 08/30/2011 Rating Production Year: 2011 Run Time: 106 mins Released By: Maple Pictures Cast: Isaiah Mustafa, Loretta Devine, Lil Bow Wow, Tyler Perry Adapted from the multi-talented playwright/filmmaker's hit stage play of the same name, TYLER PERRY'S MADEA'S BIG HAPPY FAMILY finds the cantankerous family matriarch using her unique brand of tough love to help her family weather some particularly rough waters. Madea's niece Shirley has received a frightening medical diagnosis, and she's having a hard time figuring out how to break the news to the rest of the family. Unfortunately she's not the only one in the midst of a crisis, either: Kimberly is suffering from anger issues that are threatening to destroy her marriage; Tammy's marital problems are being compounded by her disobedient children; and Byron is struggling to stay out of the drug trade after spending two years behind bars. Later, as a skeleton in the family closet pops into the picture, Madea and Aunt Bam show that love and laugher can help to overcome even the biggest obstacles. … more less -
(500) Days of Summer
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 12/22/2009 Rating Production Year: 2009 Run Time: 95 mins Released By: 20th Century Fox Cast: Zooey Deschanel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Clark Gregg, Minka Kelly, Matthew Gray Gubler Fans of HIGH FIDELITY and ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND will be charmed by this quirky film that sheds a linear plot in favor of a memory-driven look at a failed romance. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (BRICK) stars as Tom, a greeting-card writer who dreams of becoming an architect and finding his true love. Zooey Deschanel (THE HAPPENING) plays Summer, a vintage-looking beauty whose ideas about love are entirely modern. As Tom remembers his 500 days with Summer, his mind jumps from moment to moment, largely thinking of the good times in their trouble-filled relationship. Indie darlings Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt are perfectly cast in this sweet, funny film that infuses the typical romantic tropes with reality. Anyone else would have caused audiences to hate Summer, but Deschanel is adorable enough that she still endears herself to viewers. Arthouse favorite Gordon-Levitt hasn’t played a traditional romantic lead since 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU in 1999, but here he proves equally adept at portraying Tom’s sweetness and his neuroses. Music-video director Marc Webb makes his feature debut with (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, and it’s easy to see influences of his past work. The soundtrack boasts songs from Regina Spektor, Doves, Feist, Wolfmother, and, of course, The Smiths, the band that brings the couple together. Webb also adds an innovative style to the dramedy, combining a naturalistic look at love with a non-linear plot, animated vignettes, and a triumphant musical sequence. The film’s mixture of cynicism and romance makes it perfect viewing for happy couples, the recently dumped, and the hopeful singles in the audience. … more less -
Madea's Family Reunion
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 06/27/2006 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 2006 Run Time: 110 mins Released By: Lions Gate Home Entertainment Cast: Lynn Whitfield, Lisa Arrindell Anderson, Rochelle Ayetes, Maya Angelou, Cicely Tyson Tyler Perry follows up his DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN with more of his unique fusion of soapy melodrama, poetry, spirituality, romance, and raucous humor based on his popular stage play. This time around, the drama centers on a pair of half-sisters struggling to overcome the oppression of their materialistic mother (Lynn Whitfield). Weak-willed daughter Lisa (Rochelle Ayetes) is being pushed into marriage with an abusive investment banker (Blair Underwood), while Vanessa (Lisa Arrindell Anderson) is unable to trust the love of too-good-to-be-true Brian (Boris Kadjoe). It may be a bit jarring at first to veer from harrowing scenes of domestic abuse to hilarious scenes of Tyler in his dual role as the tough-talking grandma Madea (here also raising a troubled foster kid) and her flatulent brother Joe, but it works, especially when Cicely Tyson and poet Maya Angelou show up as old relatives at the reunion; their powerful presence provides the weight to anchor everything down. Hearing Tyson pour her heart out while addressing the young people at the reunion from the porch of an old slave shack--Angelou at her side--is an unforgettably moving experience. This is the work of a daringly original comedian and filmmaker; fearlessly confrontational and generous of heart (without being corny), MADEA is three kinds of great: gut-bustingly funny, socially progressive, and genuinely inspiring. … more less -

From Wrigley Field to the Art Institute of Chicago to a Polish pride parade, Ferris and his friends make the most of their day off. Jeff Dunham - Spark of Insanity
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 09/18/2007 Rating NR Production Year: 2007 Cast: Jeff Dunham More than just a stand-up comic, Jeff Dunham is a one-man comedy troupe--a ring-leader in a circus of snark. The veteran ventriloquist may be the only one with vocal chords, but he’s often the least vocal, playing straight man to a steam trunk of personalities: Achmed the Dead Terrorist, a goofball skeleton still fighting the infidels; Peanut, an odd purple creature with a fast mouth; Jose Jalapeño, a smooth-talking pepper on a stick; Bubba J, NASCAR’s biggest fan; and Walter, a dirty old man who speaks his mind. Together with his hilarious and irreverent puppets, Dunham riffs on everything from politics to family life, and slays the audience with his quick-witted banter. SPARK OF INSANITY features one of Dunham’s funniest performances, recorded live at Washington D.C.’s Warner Theater. … more less -

Back to the Future
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 02/10/2009 Rating PG Production Year: 1985 Run Time: 116 mins Released By: Universal Studios Home Video Cast: Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, Thomas F. Wilson A massive success upon its 1985 release, BACK TO THE FUTURE has since become a bona fide classic--Robert Zemeckis’s time-travel adventure has spawned sequels, theme park rides, and even a mention in Ronald Reagan’s 1986 State of the Union address. Michael J. Fox stars as Marty McFly, a restless '80s teen who takes a ride in Doc Brown’s (Christopher Lloyd) "flux capacitor"-rigged DeLorean and ends up in 1955. Once on the ground, Marty meets his teenaged mother (Lea Thompson) and accidentally wins her affections, thereby threatening the relationship she’s supposed to form with his father (the delightfully geeky Crispin Glover). Now it’s a do-or-never-be-born situation: Marty must get his parents to fall in love before Doc Brown can send him back to the proper decade. BACK TO THE FUTURE remains one of the rare family films that enjoyed both critical and box office success, and garnered a permanent spot in the pop-culture lexicon thanks to highly-quotable dialogue. The picture garnered both Golden Globe and Oscar nods (though it lost Best Original Screenplay to WITNESS), and continues to rank as one of the top-100 highest grossing films of all time. … more less -

Slap Shot
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 02/14/2006 Rating R Production Year: 1977 Run Time: 123 mins Released By: Universal Studios Home Video Cast: Paul Newman, Strother Martin, Jennifer Warren, Michael Ontkean, Lindsay Crouse A rougher version of George Roy Hill's pet theme of men as overaged adolescents, SLAP SHOT stars Paul Newman as Reggie Dunlop, the venerable player-coach of the Charlestown Chiefs, a fifth-rate minor league hockey team. When their blue-collar town falls prey to Rust Belt ills of the 1970s, attendance drops, and the greedy owner starts looking for a buyer, anxious to cash out. Dunlop is informed that the players need to crank up the box office to keep their jobs in what will likely be their last season. To the coach's dismay, general manager Joe McGrath (Strother Martin) imports the Hanson brothers, a hockey Three Stooges who like to assault soda machines and play with toys. But once Dunlop turns them loose, they're a Panzer division on ice, and the team starts winning by adopting their bone-crushing style. Although the team is on the upswing, Dunlop's wife, Francine (Jennifer Warren), seems to be through with him, and the isolated wives of the other players aren't much happier with their fate. This sidesplitting, profanity saturated film is one of the funniest ever made about any sport. While writer Nancy Dowd intended to probe darker issues--such as the greed of ownership, the blood lust of fans, and the childishness of the players--Hill submerges them in raucous laughter. Newman is near his peak as the romantic, manipulative, womanizing, hard-drinking coach, and the high-sticking Hanson brothers achieve comic immortality in their only film appearance. … more less -

Knocked Up
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 09/25/2007 Rating R Production Year: 2007 Run Time: 129 mins Released By: Universal Studios Home Video Cast: Katherine Heigl, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Jay Baruchel Katherine Heigl (GREY'S ANATOMY) and Seth Rogen star in this hilarious and touching comedy as two mismatched people brought together by a one-night-stand that results in an accidental pregnancy. Using many of the same actors from his previous film, THE 40-YEAR OLD VIRGIN, and his cult television series' UNDECLARED and FREAKS AND GEEKS, director Judd Apatow once again finds fresh humor in relationships and sex. Young, bright, and talented, Alison (Heigl) has everything going for her. After being promoted to an on-camera role at E! Television, Alison goes out to celebrate with her older sister, Debbie (Leslie Mann). Not long into the evening Debbie is called home to her kids, leaving Alison in the eager company of charming slacker Ben (Rogen). In the dark of the nightclub and in the ensuing drunk hours, Ben seems like a great guy. But in the sober light of day, Alison quickly discovers the man in her bed is nothing more than an overgrown child with no job, no money, and the social habits of a teenager. Brushing him off politely as a one-time affair, Alison goes on with her life, until two months later she realizes that the unthinkable has happened. Apatow establishes the differences between his protagonists early in the film, bringing their contrasting worlds to life with stellar performances by secondary characters. Paul Rudd has never been better in his role as Alison's bitter brother-in-law, whose somewhat dysfunctional marriage to Alison's feisty but insecure sister unfolds in parallel to Alison and Ben's story. Meanwhile, Ben's home resembles a frat house, and his friends (Jay Baruchel, Jason Segel, Jonah Hill, and Martin Starr), while hilarious, are hardly role models. KNOCKED UP will have audiences cracking up from start to finish, and it also deals with some serious issues about commitment, life choices, and becoming an adult. The film asks universal questions in a sweet and touching way, achieving a sad humor that distinguishes it from other films of its gen … more less -
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 02/15/2011 Rating R Production Year: 2004 Run Time: 108 mins Released By: Universal Studios Home Video Cast: Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Tom Wilkinson, Elijah Wood ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND is an unconventional romance told in the abstract, inventive, and comedic storytelling style of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. Like his scripts for ADAPTATION and BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, this plot works off of a relatively complex idea that is more easily explained through the language of film than through words. In its most basic description, Joel (Jim Carrey) is undergoing a medical procedure to erase the memory of his ex-girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet). However, while he is unconscious and the procedure is underway, he takes a journey through his mind, reliving moments with Clementine for fear of losing her forever. Using disjointed sound and action, foggy periods indicating Joel's confusion, and flashbacks to childhood where objects appear much bigger than they are to adult eyes, the cinematography communicates Joel's dilemma with visual hilarity. Only occasionally is the film laugh-out-loud funny; instead it is much more deeply and darkly amusing as the absurdity of the situation grows. ETERNAL SUNSHINE is nothing short of brilliant--a credit to director Michel Gondry (who has a topnotch reputation for his aesthetic music videos by artists such as Bjork). Carrey is wonderfully understated in the role of a simpleminded nice guy, and his signature goofiness is used only a handful of times. Winslet lights up the screen with her blue hair and orange sweatshirt, playing a lively free spirit and loose cannon. There are also strong supporting performances by Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, and Mark Ruffalo, along with an excellent score by Jon Brion and a peppy soundtrack including songs by E.L.O. and the Polyphonic Spree. The film's conclusion promises to satisfy viewers; it offers a beautiful metaphor for the end of a love affair that brings perfect closure to this excellent film. … more less -

Roseanne - The Complete Sixth Season
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 09/04/2012 Rating Production Year: 1993 Run Time: 540 mins Released By: Mill Creek Entertainment Cast: Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Michael Fishman, Sara Gilbert One of the major family sitcoms of the late 1980s/early 1990s, ROSEANNE became popular for its no-nonsense attitude and its humorously honest portrayal of American life. With a set resembling the living room of countless family homes across the United States, the show concerned itself the with the antics of its main star, Roseanne Barr (later Roseanne Arnold), her husband Dan (John Goodman), and their kids. More like a regular working-class family than any other characters previously seen on television, the Illinois-bred Connors use brutal honesty and acerbic wit to raise their three children: rapidly maturing Becky, sarcastic Darlene, and precocious DJ. Meanwhile, they have to deal with the typical problems of an American family, such as annoying relatives, worries about jobs and money, and the struggle to find time for themselves. ROSEANNE was among the first shows on television to deal in a truthful and deglamorized way with everyday issues that average viewers could relate to--and it managed to remain funny and touching while doing so. Each uncut episode from the show's sixth season is included here. … more less -
Wild Hogs
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 08/14/2007 Rating Production Year: 2007 Cast: Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence, John Travolta, Ray Liotta, William H. Macy Walter Becker (NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VAN WILDER) directs this tale of four friends who hit the open road. Woody (John Travolta), Doug (Tim Allen), Bobby (Martin Lawrence), and Dudley (William H. Macy) are middle-aged suburbanite buddies stuck in a rut. Doug, a dentist, yearns for respect from his pre-teen son and everyone else in his life. Bobby is a henpecked husband and unhappy plumber. Computer programmer Dudley is a flop with the ladies. And Woody, who seemed to have it all, has just lost everything. Each weekend the foursome takes to the streets of Cincinnati on their motorcycles as the "Wild Hogs." With his world secretly falling apart, Woody hits on an idea: a "Wild Hogs" road trip to the Pacific Coast. Soon, the four are embarking on the adventure of their lives. But when they stumble upon a roadside dive in New Mexico filled with "real" bikers and raise the ire of Jack (Ray Liotta), who is the leader of the Del Fuegos, the Wild Hogs discover that they are in for a greater adventure than they expected, including a showdown in the sleepy New Mexico town of Madrid. Travolta, Allen, Lawrence, and Macy have fun here, from the verbal barbs to the physical comedy, and Liotta works surprisingly well as a "real" biker who is disgusted and insulted by these weekenders. The perpetually effervescent Marisa Tomei appears as a Madrid local who catches Dudley's eye, and John C. McGinley is an overly enthusiastic highway patrolman repeatedly encountered by the foursome. Watch for an all too brief appearance from EASY RIDER star Peter Fonda, and an amusing segment from Ty Pennington of EXTREME HOME MAKEOVER. Despite the star power in this film, which was shot on location in New Mexico, it's the custom bikes and open road that really shine. … more less
