Made of Honor
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 09/16/2008 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 2008 Cast: Patrick Dempsey, Michelle Monaghan, Kevin McKidd, Kathleen Quinlan, Sydney Pollack Patrick "McDreamy" Dempsey leads this big-budget romantic comedy, making optimal use of his many swoon-inducing charms. Dempsey is Tom, a wealthy womanizer living the high life in New York City. He happily hops from bed to bed, living by a firm set of rules that keeps him from becoming romantically entangled with anyone. The only woman he makes time for is his dear college friend, Hannah (Michelle Monaghan), whom he sees weekly, and whom he adores. When Hannah suddenly takes off for Scotland on a job assignment, Tom misses her terribly, and has a dramatic realization about their relationship. He makes a plan to tell her about it as soon as she gets back, but of course she returns with a handsome Scottish fiancĂ© (Kevin McKidd) in tow. To make matters worse, she informs Tom that she must make wedding plans rather quickly, and would he please, please, please be her Maid of Honor? In typical rom-com fashion, the tale quickly escalates into over-the-top, barely believable plot twists, forcing the viewer to turn a blind eye to any holes in the story and instead focus on the pretty clothes and Dempsey's dimples. It shifts into full-on fantasy mode, with rugged lads on horseback, Scottish castles, and gargantuan New York apartments that only Bill Gates himself could afford. Monaghan is likeable and lovely in her role as the confused bride, but the star here is undoubtedly Dempsey. Despite being cast as a slick Casanova, he still manages to exude the fumbling charm from his CAN'T BUY ME LOVE days. His non-threatening grin will likely be put on repeat at slumber parties everywhere, charming yet another generation of teenage girls. … more less -

Something New
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 05/22/2007 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 2006 Run Time: 100 mins Released By: Universal Studios Home Video Cast: Sanaa Lathan, Simon Baker, Mike Epps, Blair Underwood Kenya (Sanaa Lathan) is a beautiful, successful lawyer with loving parents and a close-knit group of supportive friends--but, predictably, no love life to speak of. Out for drinks on Valentine's Day, she and her girlfriends lament the difficulty of finding the "ideal black man" (successful, educated, and attractive), and the point is driven home when a coworker sets Kenya up on a blind date with a successful, educated, and attractive landscape architect named Brian (Simon Baker)--who turns out to be, to her surprise and dismay, white. While Kenya at first tries to deny their obvious attraction, the two soon start a relationship; and though they have undeniable chemistry, cultures clash. The plot of SOMETHING NEW is not, in fact, actually new, combining many of the usual truisms of romantic comedies and interracial dramas. In fact, with his too-good-to-be-true personality (sensitive yet strong, working with his hands yet educated, determined yet patient), Brian is reminiscent of Sidney Poitier's John in GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, a man so perfect that no critic could find anything to object to beyond his race. But top-to-bottom excellent performances from an extremely talented cast make the characters three-dimensional and save the movie from clichĂ©. Lathan's radiant, skillful performance manages to display all of Kenya's many neuroses and flaws, even her occasional rudeness, without ever allowing her to become unlikable. The always excellent Earl Billings and Alfre Woodard bring real warmth and depth to the roles of Kenya's parents, and Donald Faison displays perfect comic timing as her playboy brother. Blair Underwood--as Brian's main competition--miraculously manages to make his attractive, suave character somewhat unappealing. The actors, working with Sanaa Hamri's sure-handed and inventive direction (in her feature film debut, no less), give the movie a lively spark and likeability that elevate it above its genre conventions. … more less -

Wild Child
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 11/17/2009 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 2009 Run Time: 99 mins Released By: Universal Studios Home Video Cast: Emma Roberts, Natasha Richardson, Shirley Henderson, Aidan Quinn Nicholas Moore directs this tweeny bopper fish-out-of-water comedy starring Emma Roberts. Poppy (Roberts) is a spoiled Malibu brat, and the film opens with her wreaking havoc on her stepmother's moving-in day. Her father (Aidan Quinn) decides he's had it with her wild ways and promptly packs her off to an English boarding school. Poppy arrives at Abbey Mount with blond extensions, a designer wardrobe, and plenty of attitude, and she is furious when she is forced to follow the school's strict code of conduct. She is determined to find some way back to sunny Malibu. She soon befriends her roommates, a loyal, fun-loving troop of girls, who agree to help her come up with a way to get kicked out of school. They devise a scheme for Poppy to get caught fooling around with the headmistress's (Natasha Richardson) son, Freddie (Alex Pettyfer), but things soon go awry when Poppy's rival Harrier (Georgia King) tries to step in and foil her plan. Poppy is forced to make some big changes, and decide what it is she truly wants. Emma Roberts is perhaps best known as the niece of Julia, and her wide smile is indeed reminiscent of her superstar aunt's, as is her feisty charm and likeability. This film is loud, silly fun, and it manages to send forth some very positive messages without sucking all the joy out of being a teen. It does touch on sex and underage drinking, so it might not be for the lower tween set. But for the older crew--this one is sure to be a sleepover favorite. … more less -

Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 10/05/2004 Rating PG-13 Production Year: 2002 Run Time: 76 mins Released By: Sony Pictures Home Cast: Adam Sandler, Kevin Nealon, Jon Lovitz, Tyra Banks, Norm Crosby Adam Sandler and director Seth Kearsley present an animated Hanukkah tale with ADAM SANDLER'S EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS. Davey Stone (Sandler) is lurching down a wayward path. He's a drunk and aging delinquent, infamous in Dukesberry for spreading misery as deftly as he belches full sentences. He's facing prison when Whitey Duvall (Sandler again), a lovable, physically challenged man, proposes that Stone work with him at the community center as a referee for the local basketball league. The surly Stone accepts the job, and moves in with Whitey and his twin sister, Eleanore (also voiced by Sandler). But the true test is whether Stone can rise above his self-destructive habits in order to reunite with his former girlfriend, Jennifer (Jackie Titone), and act as a role model for her young son, Benjamin (Austin Stout). The snow-covered landscapes in EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS have a pleasing, three-dimensional realism that's as cheerful as a Hallmark holiday card. Sandler, with his wide range of inane, high-pitched voices, is as funny as ever, punctuating the innocent world of EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS with the refreshingly irreverent brand of humor he displayed in HAPPY GILMORE, THE WEDDING SINGER, and BIG DADDY. Though the film isn't really for kids, Sandler and Kearsley manage to make even the more daring animated characters--like one with three breasts--seem harmless. EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS also features the voices of Jon Lovitz, Kevin Nealon, Rob Schneider, and Tyra Banks. … more less -
