Genre: Dramas Release Date: 05/21/2013 Rating R Production Year: 2003 Run Time: 126 mins Released By: Warner Home Video Cast: Angelina Jolie, Clive Owen, Teri Polo, Linus Roache, Noah Emmerich Director Martin Campbell (GOLDENEYE) balances a romantic tale, serious political commentary, and beautifully shot scenery from exotic locations in BEYOND BORDERS. Oscar winner Angelina Jolie gives a moving performance inspired by her real-life U.N. work, and has the perfect romantic foil in Clive Owen. BEYOND BORDERS follows the problematic blossoming romance between busy American socialite Sarah Jordan (Jolie), and rogue doctor Nick Callahan (Owen). The two initially meet in 1984 at a charity event in London. Sarah is still flushed with excitement from her recent marriage, but is nevertheless enchanted by Nick's impassioned speech on behalf of starving children in Ethiopia. Sarah decides to help the cause in Africa, meeting Nick there and sparking a romantic connection which is cut short because of family and work commitments. Four years later, Sarah finds herself alone after a torrid divorce. Her work for the United Nations now consumes her thoughts, and when the chance to travel to war-torn Cambodia--and reunite with Nick--arises, it proves too good to turn down. The two immediately hit it off, but Nick's commitment to his work once again causes them to separate. You Can Count on Me
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 05/21/2013 Rating R Production Year: 2000 Run Time: 110 mins Released By: Warner Home Video Cast: Laura Linney, Mark Ruffalo, Matthew Broderick, Jon Tenney Set in a small town in upstate New York, YOU CAN COUNT ON ME looks at a brother and sister who grew up together as orphans but now face life with very different perspectives. Sammy (Laura Linney) works at the local bank. Most of her attention goes into raising her 8-year-old son, Rudy (Rory Culkin), and drifting in a tepid romance with Bob (Jon Tenney). The first disruption to her dutiful routine arrives in the form of new bank manager Brian (Matthew Broderick), intent on whipping his employees into shape. Then Sammy's wayward brother, Terry (Mark Ruffalo) shows up after a long absence, and her happiness quickly turns sour when she realizes he has only come to ask for money--again. But with all the elements for a backwater soap opera in place, the story instead becomes a subtle portrait of good intentions and fractured relationships. First-time director Ken Lonergan was already a noted Hollywood screenwriter (ANALYZE THIS), but he saved this screenplay for himself. Avoiding both big-budget maudlin and low-budget posturing, he steers YOU COUNT ON ME straight to the gut with an artful balance of pain and comedy. A good number of excellent performances, especially by Ruffalo as the screw-up Terry, turn the film into a remarkably honest and moving experience. … more less -

Narc
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 05/21/2013 Rating R Production Year: 2002 Cast: Ray Liotta, Jason Patric, Busta Rhymes, Richard Chevolleau, Chi McBride An aggressive chase and a stray bullet nearly ends the career of undercover narcotics agent Nick Tellis (Jason Patric) whose job is tearing apart his life and his family. Tellis dreams of working a less stressful desk job, and he knows that a conviction in an upcoming case will land him the job. So he accepts an assignment assisting the overlong investigation of a slain officer, hoping it will be his last experience of street work. Tellis is partnered with Lt. Henry Oak (Ray Liotta) whose unorthodox methods are part of the reason the case is still unsolved. Strict attention to police procedure and cop lingo lift writer-director Joe Carnahan's (BLOOD, GUTS, BULLETS AND OCTANE) gritty, violent film above the cliches of the typical police thriller. NARC is fueled by impassioned performances from leads Patrick, a wary officer who seeks the truth as a means to his own psychological redemption; and Liotta (who also produced), as a broken cop with sadistic, rule-breaking tendencies. The film's grimy immediacy is to the credit of cinematographer Alex Nepomniaschy. … more less -
Stop-Loss
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 05/21/2013 Rating R Production Year: 2008 Cast: Ryan Phillippe, Abbie Cornish, Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ciaran Hinds Director Kimberly Peirce (BOYS DON'T CRY) tackles another controversial topic with STOP-LOSS, the story of a U.S. soldier forced back into battle. Brandon King (Ryan Phillippe) has just returned to Texas after a harrowing final tour in Iraq. He's accompanied by the remaining men from his unit, all of whom are more than a little shell-shocked. Welcomed home as a hero, Brandon is awarded a Purple Heart by a visiting state senator. But the homecoming quickly turns sour, as each of the soldiers struggles to assimilate back into society. Tommy (Joseph Gordon Levitt) can't lay off the booze, and Steve (Channing Tatum) roughs up his fiancĂ©e. Brandon is eager to put the war behind him, but that dream quickly fizzles when he learns that he has been "stop-lossed," or ordered back for another, involuntary tour of duty. Stunned by the news, he goes AWOL and forms a plan to get help from the senator who so recently honored him. He hits the road for D.C., all the while trying to cope with PTSD and battle flashbacks. Torn between his fierce patriotism and what he believes to be outright betrayal by the U.S. Army, he doesn't know where to turn or what to do. He is ultimately faced with the harshest of choices: Iraq, or a life in exile. There are now dozens of films that grapple with the war in Iraq, but STOP-LOSS is unique in its attempt to reach out to a younger audience. Produced by MTV, the film features a striking young cast and a thumping hip-hop soundtrack. There are many commendable performances, most notably from Phillippe and Levitt. Despite the occasional melodrama of some of the scenes, Peirce pulls no punches, and really hammers home the tragic exploitation of American troops. … more less -

Genre: Horror/Suspense Release Date: 05/21/2013 Rating R Production Year: 1998 Run Time: 100 mins Released By: Warner Home Video Cast: Annette Bening, Robert Downey, Stephen Rea, Aidan Quinn, Paul Guilfoyle This darkly imaginative film from director Neil Jordan (THE CRYING GAME, INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE) follows Claire, a psychic New England housewife (Annette Bening) who loses her grip on reality when her dreams connect with those of a psychotic child murderer (Robert Downey Jr.). Centered around a ghost town submerged in the local reservoir and a creepy apple orchard, Claire's disturbing visions baffle the police and eventually lead to her confinement in an insane asylum. As the killer's fantasies continue to haunt her, Claire realizes she must succumb to her link with his twisted psyche if she is to escape from the hospital, track him down, and put an end to the madness. Jordan's direction captures his heroine's horrific nightmares and the autumnal New England locales brilliantly, while Bening attacks her role with ferocious gusto. The film's uniquely rich, color-saturated look comes courtesy of cinematographer Darius Khondji. Jordan wrote the screenplay with Bruce Robinson (WITHNAIL & I), adapted from the novel DOLL'S EYES by Bari Wood, and longtime Jordan collaborator Stephen Rea costars as Claire's doubtful psychiatrist. … more less -

Weather Man, The
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 05/21/2013 Rating R Production Year: 2005 Run Time: 101 mins Released By: Warner Home Video Cast: Nicolas Cage, Michael Caine, Hope Davis, Nicholas Hoult, Michael Rispoli Nicholas Cage stars in this dramatic comedy from director Gore Verbinski (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL), once again playing a handsome bachelor in a post mid-life crisis (ADAPTATION, THE FAMILY MAN, MATCHSTICK MEN). The son of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Spritz (Michael Caine), David Spritz (Cage) is a successful Chicago weatherman who for reasons beyond his understanding, frequently gets fast-food thrown at him on the street. Could the reason for this be that David's job, though lucrative, requires little exertion, allowing him to occupy what even he admits is a relatively easy existence? Living in the shadow of his father's greatness, and in the wake of a recent marital separation, David messily struggles to impress his father, reconnect to his estranged wife (Hope Davis), and save his troubled kids (Gemmenne de la Peña, Nicholas Hoult), all while trying to land a coveted job in New York. David's efforts to reach and protect his kids feel realistic in that they are heartfelt, but not always successful. Likewise, David's marriage contains tangible flaws that reveal themselves in interesting ways. THE WEATHER MAN contains just as much sadness as it does comedy, and does a good job of finding one in the other. Some of the film's most heartbreaking scenes are also the funniest, the best example of this being when David learns that his daughter is being called "Camel-toe" at school. Each time Cage's clueless and vulnerable David gets hit with a burrito, milk shake, or McDonald's apple pie, we genuinely feel for the guy. Through increasingly insightful voiceovers, viewers are taken on David's journey from the lazy desire for things to be easy to the hard realization that things never are, and as David's wise father says early on in the film: life without struggle is meaningless. … more less -

Bringing Out the Dead
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 05/21/2013 Rating R Production Year: 1999 Run Time: 121 mins Released By: Warner Home Video Cast: Nicolas Cage, Patricia Arquette, Ving Rhames, John Goodman, Tom Sizemore Martin Scorsese exhilaratingly adapts Joe Connelly's novel about Frank (Nicolas Cage), a paramedic working among the filth and mental desolation of New York City's Hell's Kitchen in the early 1990s. Lately he has been haunted by the visions of a beautiful 18 year-old girl whom he was unable to resuscitate. Soon after, another image begins to torment him, that of Mary (Patricia Arquette), a recovering drug addict who enters Frank's life when he attempts to save her father. His spiral into even further confusion is paralleled with his three driving partners: Larry (a boisterous John Goodman), whose advice to Frank is not to think about all the death and violence; Marcus (a scene-stealing Ving Rhames), a religious fanatic who uses his medical skills as propaganda for the Lord; and Walls (a maniacal Tom Sizemore), a loose cannon who has no sensible grounding whatsoever. In order to escape the madness that is consuming him, Frank asks, unsuccessfully, to be fired. He must ride out the nightmare, trying to redeem the lives of Rose, Mary, and himself in the process. Scorsese uses his camera to capture Frank's wavering mental state with tilted angles and fast-speed photography. In portraying the tormented Frank, Cage dives wholeheartedly into character, delivering another fiery performance. … more less
