Inkheart
Genre: Science-Fiction/Fantasy Release Date: 06/23/2009 Rating PG Production Year: 2009 Run Time: 106 mins Released By: Universal Studios/Alliance Films Cast: Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany, Helen Mirren, Jim Broadbent, Andy Serkis Cornelia Funke’s best-selling novel, INKHEART, comes to life in director Iain Softley’s (THE SKELETON KEY, THE WINGS OF THE DOVE) feature-film adaptation of the same name. For 12 years, bookbinder Mo (Brendan Fraser) and his daughter, Meggie (Eliza Hope Bennett), have been traveling the world, poking around secondhand bookstores. Meggie correctly assumes that her father is looking for her mother, Resa (Sienna Guillory), who disappeared without a trace. What Meggie doesn’t know is that Mo is a Silvertongue, and when he reads a story aloud, the details and characters come to vivid life. But when a character comes out of a book, someone has to go back in, and Mo is searching a copy of the book, titled "Inkheart," into which Resa literally disappeared. When Mo read the story aloud, unaware of his powers, she was sucked into the story, and the fantastical novel’s villainous characters were released. Now, Mo and Meggie have to keep evil Capricorn and his henchmen from realizing their diabolical plot, and send everyone back where they belong. INKHEART is awash with colorful details. Capricorn has had to make do with a stuttering Silvertongue who delivers characters that are half-read: text from the book is tattooed on their faces, or they suffer some other malady, emerging from the book mute or with an odd physical feature. Paul Bettany is engaging as Dustfinger, a character who desperately wants to be read back into "Inkheart" and return to his family, portrayed by Bettany’s real-life love, Jennifer Connelly, in a miss-her-if-you-blink performance. Helen Mirren is good fun as eccentric, feisty bibliophile Aunt Elinor, and Jim Broadbent appears as the novel’s author, who is enthralled by the possibilities of Mo’s gift. … more less -
Confessions of a Shopaholic
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 06/23/2009 Rating PG Production Year: 2009 Run Time: 105 mins Released By: Buena Vista Home Entertainment Cast: Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy, Joan Cusack, John Goodman, John Lithgow Based on a pair of effervescent novels by Sophie Kinsella, CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC is a light and bubbly confection that should appeal to those who can identify with its heroine's passion. Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher, WEDDING CRASHERS) has a label-filled wardrobe that any fashionista would covet, but she also has credit card debt to match. She craves a job at the Vogue-like Alette, but a position at a financial magazine at the same publishing company may be her ticket in. Despite her painfully low credit rating, Becky starts dishing out advice on saving, while debt collector Derek Smeath (character actor Robert Stanton) is hot on her Louboutin heels. Meanwhile, she is competing for the affections of her charming boss, Luke Brandon (Hugh Dancy, THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB), with icy Alette employee Alicia Billington (Leslie Bibb, IRON MAN). A well-heeled hybrid of SEX AND THE CITY and THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, SHOPAHOLIC features the talents of Patricia Field, costume designer for those two films. The clothes are almost on an equal footing with the actors here, and each well-chosen piece in Manhattan shop windows or worn by Bloomwood helps contribute to the film's bright mood. A lesser actress might have been lost in all the colors, but Fisher is a formidable comic presence who pulls off Becky's ditzy lines and goofy falls with equal aplomb. Those hoping for a smart discourse on the perils of credit cards and excess spending are certainly watching the wrong film, but SHOPAHOLIC may just be the fashion equivalent of food porn for dieters. … more less -
Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 06/16/2009 Rating PG Production Year: 2006 Run Time: 86 mins Released By: 20th Century Fox Cast: Bill Murray, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Billy Connolly, Lucy Davis, Breckin Meyer This sequel to the 2004 hit GARFIELD: THE MOVIE maintains that film's clever intermingling of live action supporting cast with a CGI-animated Garfield, that self-centered, lasagna-quaffing feline, famed of newspaper comic strips by Jim Davis. Though the title is a riff from Dickens, the story here is actually copped from Mark Twain's THE PRINCE & THE PAUPER. While tagging along to England with his lovely vet girlfriend (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Garfield's owner John Arbuckle (Breckin Meyer) inadvertently brings Garfield (voiced by Bill Murray) along, where he winds up being mistaken for Prince (voiced by Tim Curry), the royal cat of a lordly estate. There's a plot afoot to steal Prince's lands and title, orchestrated by the nefarious Dargis (Billy Connolly) and it's up to Garfield to save the day, that is if he can get his face out of the lasagna long enough. Connolly brings a contagious sense of malicious fun to his role as the bad guy, and Bill Murray fans will be licking their whiskers over his droll take on Garfield's lazy anti-heroics. A roster of top British actors lends their voices to some animals on the estate, including: Bob Hoskins, Richard E. Grant, and Jane Horrocks. Fluffy and friendly overall, this is fine family fare, rated PG for some cheeky bathroom humor. … more less -
Tender Mercies
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 06/02/2009 Rating PG Production Year: 1983 Run Time: 92 mins Released By: Lions Gate Home Entertainment Cast: Robert Duvall, Tess Harper, Betty Buckley, Allan Hubbard While director Bruce Beresford has often dwelled on the amusing peccadilloes of southerners, in this film he has adapted his style to characters whose manners are as plain and unadorned as the landscape they inhabit. The film stars Robert Duvall as Mac Sledge, formerly an icon of country & western music, now down-and-out, a penniless alcoholic. Rosa Lee (Tess Harper), the young widow who owns the rural Texas motel where he has ended up, allows him to work off his board. As the months pass, the singer develops a bond with Rosa and her young son, experiencing the healing effects of this deeply religious woman's compassion. They become a family when she accepts Mac's offer of marriage, and he continues to rebuild his life. He attempts to see his daughter, Sue Ann (Ellen Barkin), whom he hasn't seen in years, and despite a nasty dust-up with Dixie (Betty Buckley), his ex-wife, is finally able to do so. However, the last tragedy he must confront is one that will truly test his recovery. Less a traditional story than a chain of epiphanies on faith and love, this masterpiece of low-key naturalism is arguably the finest work in the distinguished careers of both Duvall and Beresford. … more less -
New in Town
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 05/26/2009 Rating PG Production Year: 2009 Run Time: 96 mins Released By: Lions Gate Home Entertainment Cast: Renée Zellweger, Harry Connick, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, J.K. Simmons, Frances Conroy Renee Zellweger stars opposite Harry Connick Jr. in this snow-packed romantic comedy. NEW IN TOWN begins in Miami, home to Lucy Hill (Zellweger), a single, high-powered executive on the fast track to being a CEO. With her spiked heels, plush bachelorette pad, and fierce collection of power suits, Lucy is unprepared when her boss sends her to snowy Minnesota to work on-site at one of the company's factories. Reluctantly leaving her sunny home, Lucy lands in New Ulm, a small town distinguished by a thick Midwestern accent, a strong work ethic, and an appropriately skeptical attitude toward big-city newcomers like Lucy, who finds herself in a brutal battle against several factory workers, a nosy assistant (Siobhan Fallon), and a stubborn union rep (Connick) who, as fate would have it, just happens to be a love interest as well. Zellweger appears a bit wooden at the start of the film but eases into her role as the film progresses. As her character grows more comfortable in her own skin and develops some empathy towards her new neighbors, we see Zellweger's familiar charm emerge. Much of the film's humor comes at the expense of Minnesotans, but the cast delivers the jokes in good fun. Director Jonas Elmer captures some chemistry between his two leads, though the film doesn't rely too heavily on this romance. Instead, it explores the differences in small- versus big-town life, exposing the unique, homey appeal of the former. By focusing on the people working behind the scenes, NEW IN TOWN celebrates a way of American life that is rarely the focus of Hollywood romantic comedies. … more less -

Little Manhattan
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 03/17/2009 Rating PG Production Year: 2005 Run Time: 90 mins Released By: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment Cast: Josh Hutcherson, Charlie Ray, Cynthia Nixon, Bradley Whitford, Willie Garson Mark Levin, who penned the film WIMBLEDON and was a co-producer of 80's staple THE WONDER YEARS, makes his directorial debut with LITTLE MANHATTAN. Simultaneously heartwarming and grueling, the film is a charming depiction of urban puppy love, set to a backdrop of landmarks New Yorkers will enjoy spotting. Gabe (Josh Hutcherson, ZATHURA) is a precocious 11-year-old who has a happy life on the Upper West Side, playing ball with his friends and preparing for a football career someday under the eye of his doting dad (Bradley Whitford, THE WEST WING, THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS). The only wrench in the works comes from his parents' long road to divorce, and his mom's (Cynthia Nixon, SEX & THE CITY) decision to start dating while Dad still lives in the apartment. When Gabe decides to sign up for karate class, his world is turned upside down by Rosemary Tesescoe (newcomer Charlie Ray), the "third-prettiest girl" in his class. Rosemary is good at karate while Gabe struggles with it, and her offer to help him practice leads to a chance for the kids to get to know each other. This gives rise to Gabe's eye-opening shift in how he sees Rosemary--and girls in general--as he discovers feelings he didn't even know existed. The halting evolution of their relationship avoids sentimentality, guided by Gabe's internal monologue that is both hilariously uncertain and surprisingly wise. The kids do things like get lost together in Central Park, and ride the subway alone for the first time--braving the terrors of the West Village, no less--exploring the city and their newfound feelings with a refreshing sincerity. Gabe's grand gestures manage to inspire the adults around him to rethink some things and take some risks of their own, while his discoveries about the meaning of love are something to which viewers of any age can relate. … more less -
Ultimate Gift, The
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 03/17/2009 Rating PG Production Year: 2007 Run Time: 118 mins Released By: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment Cast: Drew Fuller, James Garner, Ali Hillis, Abigail Breslin, Brian Dennehy The videotaped will of deceased billionaire Red Stevens (James Garner) includes the "ultimate gift" for his spoiled, sullen grandson Jason (Drew Fuller). A series of tasks meant to turn Jason from a hedonistic jerk into a compassionate human being is included in the will, but whether that's the gift or there's a fortune at the end of the rainbow is something Jason will just have to wait to find out. First, he's sent to Texas to work on the ranch of one of Red's old pals (Brian Dennehey). Then his trust fund is cut off and he's thrown into the streets where he battles a bum for a park bench and eventually makes friends with a young girl--dying of leukemia--named Emily (Abigail Breslin). There's some romantic bonding with Emily's struggling mom (Ali Hills) and danger down in Costa Rica, where Jason winds up hostage to some drug-running thugs. Bill Cobbs and Lee Meriwether are the lawyers who monitor Jason's progress. This is a nice little movie, with a straightforward spiritual agenda. But it gets everything right, with minimum sermonizing and maximum heart. The cast is clearly into the spirit of the matter: Abigail Breslin (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) radiates oddball charm, and the eyes of old pros Garner, Denehey, Meriwether, and Cobbs are alight with compassion and nobility. … more less -

City of Ember
Genre: Science-Fiction/Fantasy Release Date: 01/20/2009 Rating PG Production Year: 2008 Run Time: 95 mins Released By: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment Cast: Bill Murray, Tim Robbins, Saoirse Ronan, Harry Treadaway, Mary Kay Place The lights are going out in the City of Ember, a time-limited underground haven created some 200 years ago by the higher-ups of humanity in a world on the brink of disaster. Meanwhile, many of its literally and figuratively in-the-dark citizens don't suspect a thing. The only wise ones are two plucky teenagers (Saoirse Ronan, Harry Treadaway) who are devoted to finding--with or without the help of the cagey Mayor Cole (Bill Murray)--the exit from Ember. Screenwriting credit for CITY OF EMBER, a refreshing fantasy film based on the first novel in author Jeanne DuPrau's sci-fi/adventure series for young adults, belongs to none other than Caroline Thompson. She's a silver screen veteran of family-friendly otherworldliness who's collaborated on many of Tim Burton's most definitive projects, and indeed she's brought to this live-action sophomore effort from enthusiastic movie-geek director Gil Kenan (MONSTER HOUSE) a miniaturist sensibility reminiscent of the condensed and simply plotted eccentricity of CORPSE BRIDE and A NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. In stark contrast to some of the more epically turgid fantasy films released in the wake of Harry Potter's first outing, EMBER harks back to the modestly scaled ethos of cinematic spectacle typically embodied by the whimsical adventure movies made for children in the 1980s. When the film's farfetched premise meets its unadorned storytelling to unfold in a neatly contained, nearly real-time episode, it renders the image of ordinary children traversing an architectural phantasmagoria with the kind of paradoxical patina of fluffy-yet-provocative fantasy that can stimulate the imaginations of both kids and adults. The movie's neon-filamented aesthetic, a post-apocalyptic pastiche of industrialization, is sometimes evocative of German expressionism. Still, including cinematographer Xavier Perez Grobiet's kinetic tracking shots, Kenan's film is not without its 21st-century elements. … more less -

Genre: Comedies Release Date: 12/02/2008 Rating PG Production Year: 2008 Run Time: 95 mins Released By: Weinstein Company/Genius Cast: Ice Cube, Keke Palmer, Dash Mihok, Tasha Smith, Jill Marie Jones Based on the true story of the first female quarterback to play in a Pop Warner football game, THE LONGSHOTS is an inspiring underdog story of personal triumph and small-town values. The film opens in down-on-its-luck Minden, Illinois, where 11-year-old Jasmine Plummer (Keke Palmer) copes with the pain of an absentee father and her classmates' constant antagonism. Jasmine's fortunes begin to change with the emergence of her uncle, Curtis (Ice Cube). Once a rising football star but now out of work, Curtis dreams of escaping Minden for the sunny promise of Miami. But when he sees Jasmine's gift for throwing the football, Curtis helps her overcome self-doubt and skepticism to join Minden's woeful Pop Warner team. Inspired by Jasmine's skill and toughness, and with the addition of Curtis as a coach, the team earns a spot in the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Miami. But as the national media swoop in to cover the team's story, Jasmine and Curtis come face-to-face with their biggest obstacle: the reappearance of Jasmine's father. Will Curtis and Jasmine lead the team to glory, or will Jasmine's father once again tear apart a loving family? Directed by Limp Bizkit front man Fred Durst, the film features excellent performances by Ice Cube and Keke Palmer (AKEELAH AND THE BEE), the youngest person ever nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award. Grounded in real struggles and real people, THE LONGSHOTS eschews typical Hollywood theatrics to tell an ultimately authentic tale of overcoming great odds by finding greatness in ourselves and each other. … more less -
Perfect Holiday, The
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 11/11/2008 Rating PG Production Year: 2007 Run Time: 96 mins Released By: Sony Pictures Home Cast: Morris Chestnut, Gabrielle Union, Charlie Murphy, Katt Williams, Faizon Love Christmas wishes come true in Lance Rivera's (THE COOKOUT) second turn as a director, THE PERFECT HOLIDAY. Struggling songwriter Benjamin Armstrong (Morris Chestnut) is an all-around nice guy who is both looking for love and waiting for his big break. In the meantime, he works part-time as a shopping mall Santa, and one day receives a sweet request from young Emily (Khail Bryant): all she wants for Christmas is for her mommy to meet a nice man. A busy divorced single mother of three, Nancy (Gabrielle Union) has lost her faith in love since her bitter divorce from James, aka mega-rap star J-Jizzy (Charlie Murphy). When Benjamin uses Emily's inside information to make her Christmas wish come true, it looks likes he's found love with Nancy. But will a big career break cost him everything? And will Nancy's eldest son, John-John (Malik Hammond) accept him and give up on his dream that his parents will reconcile? With some help from Mrs. Christmas (Queen Latifah), reminiscent of Clarence in IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, they all just might have a perfect holiday. Murphy, who bears an uncanny resemblance to his younger brother Eddie, is fun as J-Jizzy, pushing the gangsta rapper stereotype to comic extremes. Terrence Howard appears briefly as Bah-Humbug, who attempts to foil Mrs. Christmas's good deeds. Faizon Love and Katt Williams lend comic support as Ben's best buddy, Jamal, and J-Jizzy's manager, Delicious. Union and Chestnut make a lovely couple, but the kids steal the show here. Hammond does a great job as a little boy who is trying to be a man and along the way realizes that his father isn't perfect. Bryant and Jeremy Gumbs, who plays middle-child Mikey, make their big-screen debuts. … more less -
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 11/04/2008 Rating PG Production Year: 1985 Run Time: 90 mins Released By: Warner Home Video Cast: Paul Reubens, Elizabeth Daily, Mark Holton, Diane Salinger, Judd Omen The imaginative, hilarious comedy, PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE, stars happy-go-lucky Pee-Wee Herman (aka comedian Paul Reubens.) Pee-Wee Herman is not an average little boy--he exists in a grown-up body, has a penchant for 1950s Retro memorabilia, and lives in a zany, make-believe world. He is on a mission to find his beloved red bicycle, which has been stolen, and on the way Pee-Wee has a series of cartoon-like adventures. When a fortune teller instructs Pee-Wee to look for his bike in the basement of the Alamo, he takes her advice. Embarking on a kind of Hero's Journey, Pee-Wee comes into contact with characters even crazier than he is. One of the more memorable scenes comes after he starts up a touching friendship with a romantic waitress (Diane Salinger) and is chased by her boyfriend (Jon Harris) around a park of giant dinosaur models until he finds himself in an unfriendly biker bar where, in order to avoid being killed, he performs an impromptu dance to the old surfer tune "Tequila." With imaginative sets and dream sequences that use claymation and pixilated models, PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE is a side-splitting comedy that references almost every Hollywood genre, especially the perennial favorite Road Movie. … more less -

Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed
Genre: Education/General Interest Release Date: 10/21/2008 Rating PG Production Year: 2008 Run Time: 95 mins Released By: Universal Music & Video Distribution Cast: Ben Stein, Richard Dawkins Though Ben Stein is perhaps most famous for his sleep-inducing drone in FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF or for his eponymous game show, he is also a highly regarded New York Times columnist and was a speechwriter for both Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford during their presidencies. For EXPELLED: NO INTELLIGENCE ALLOWED, he needs all his powers of persuasion as he calls attention to the plight of exiled scientists and professors. In this documentary, Stein travels the world and speaks to men and women who have lost their jobs and their standings in the scientific world because of their association with intelligent design. EXPELLED uses the Berlin Wall as a metaphor and asserts that these people have been unjustly ousted, merely for speaking their minds. It carefully explains the differences between creationism and intelligent design and demonstrates that the latter is a belief held by people of all deity-based faiths, not just Christianity. It also devotes time to the connections between Darwinism and Hitler's regime. The film's climax features Stein going head-to-head with Richard Dawkins, a renowned atheist and author of the bestseller THE GOD DELUSION. Obviously, neither man budges in his firmly held beliefs, but it's fascinating to watch a debate between two undeniably intelligent men, regardless of whose side you're on. EXPELLED doesn't spend most of its time debating intelligent design and evolution. Instead it focuses largely on how the debate itself and its proponents have been ignored or pushed out of classrooms and academia. Filmmaker Nathan Frankowski inserts both original animations and clips of famous films (including PLANET OF THE APES and THE WIZARD OF OZ) to further illustrate his point. Though critics may find fault with EXPELLED for its one-sidedness, it's no more biased than any of Michael Moore's critically lauded documentaries. … more less -
