Synopsis
It's 2142, and a toxic rain has been falling on earth for a hundred years. The last city in the world is divided, with the privileged minority living in the enclosed Ecoban, and the poor people outside, known as diggers because they mine the carbonate that keeps Ecoban thriving. When a young captain, Jay, witnesses her boss, Commander Locke, shoot a digger leader in cold blood for refusing to carry out an order--jettisoning a deck that would result in the death of many of the workers just to save some equipment--Jay's loyalty is tested. Her loyalty is tested even further when she discovers that a rebel leader who has broken into Ecoban is her childhood sweetheart, Shua. As the rebels plan to infiltrate Ecoban, Locke prepares to destroy them--even if it means destroying Ecoban in the process.
SKY BLUE, also known as WONDERFUL DAYS in Korea, combines elements of Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS, George Lucas's STAR WARS, and George Miller's MAD MAX series, using computer graphic animation, matte painting, and live-action miniatures to create a magnificent visual landscape. The postapocalyptic setting features an always-threatening gray sky; blue sky has not been seen in ages. The unique animation style is furthered by an environmental story of pollution's devastation on humankind. Moon Sang Kim's first film, which has been made into an English-language version, is a marvel to watch, enhanced by Il Won's magical, haunting score.
